Cindy Sherman is a female artist who was born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey which is located just outside of New York City. Unlike most artists Sherman did not grow up interested in art, in fact she did not really explore and discover her love for art until she was in college and enrolled at State University College at Buffalo. One day when Sherman was painting she discovered that she felt trapped by painting and wanted her work to be more than just a picture, so instead of painting Sherman got into photography. Sherman’s’ photographs were very unique, Sherman would take pictures of herself and became known as Untitled Film Studies. Even though all her photographs were of herself, Sherman would play a role or dress up and seem to be someone other than herself. In this photograph it is a solo black and white picture of Cindy Sherman, and it appears that is she is laying on her back in a bed. Not only is she just lying in a bed but she is only wearing a bra and underwear leaving her stomach and legs exposed. In this picture her eyes are looking straight up at the celling. Joseph Hirsch’s painting Daniel was painted in 1976-1977. In 1978 during the153rd Annual Exhibition of the National Academy of Design, it won the First Benjamin Altman (Figure) prize. It measures 38 inches by 45 inches (96.52 cm x 114.3 cm) with a five inch gold wood frame surrounding it. The medium is oil on canvas. Everything within the painting is centered to draw your eyes to the action of the turned head and the pointed finger. According to the placard next to the painting this is a modern day version of the biblical story of Belshazzar’s Feast following the sacking of Jesualism from the Book of Daniel. From this point on, each figure within the painting will be addressed as Hirsch intended. The painting depicts a seated king, a dozing courtesan and Daniel. The three figures are the focal point of the composition. Hirsch uses a strong color palette to give the painting a luxurious and wealthy feel. Although the detail is not miniscule, the composition as a whole is easily understood. The use of oil paint allowed Hirsch to play with the composition as it was created.
An influential American printmaker and painter as she was known for impressionist style in the 1880s, which reflected her ideas of the modern women and created artwork that displayed the maternal embrace between women and children; Mary Cassatt was truly the renowned artist in the 19th century. Cassatt exhibited her work regularly in Pennsylvania where she was born and raised in 1844. However, she spent most of her life in France where she was discovered by her mentor Edgar Degas who was the very person that gave her the opportunity that soon made one of the only American female Impressionist in Paris. An exhibition of Japanese woodblock Cassatt attends in Paris inspired her as she took upon creating a piece called, “Maternal Caress” (1890-91), a print of mother captured in a tender moment where she caress her child in an experimental dry-point etching by the same artist who never bared a child her entire life. Cassatt began to specialize in the portrayal of children with mother and was considered to be one of the greatest interpreters in the late 1800s.

The article has two parts, the first part is ““A Response to Mary Gordon” by Sally Mann,” she protects her family pictures from critics that are against her work such as Mary Gordon. (p. 228 - 229). Sally Mann is a photographer that takes pictures of her children and a series of her pictures, her children are nude and the way that they are posing makes some critics question her work. Pictures tell a lot but can be misread between the person behind the camera and the one that see’s the photograph. (p. 229) She looks at her pictures and see’s her children’s innocence while others see it in a sexual way with her children’s poses and gazes. (p. 229) The critics against her work think that it is bad to expose her children in that manner. Mary Gordon does not like Sally Mann’s photo of “The Perfect Tomato”, Gordon thinks that Mann staged the photo, she thinks that all Mann’s photos are always structured and that her children are posing through her commands. Among the various pairs of artists listed, Do Ho Suh and Nancy Burson attracted my attention immediately. The former one is the representation of post identity and the latter one reflects the fluidity if identity. Suh and Burson share some similarities and have their own distinct features. I feel connected to both of them since they thought and emotion they intend to express happen to have the same stance as I do. Many might have been working on Good Friday, but many others were enjoying The Frist Museum of Visual Arts. A museum visitor visited this exhibit on April 14, 2017 early in the morning. The time that was spent at the art museum was approximately two hours and a half. The first impression that one received was that this place was a place of peace and also a place to expand the viewer’s imagination to understand what artists were expressing to the viewers. Cassatt’s family perceived traveling as an essential part of the learning process thus she had the advantage of visiting various capitals such as Paris, London, and Berlin. Cassatt studied to become a professional artist and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She later went to study in France under Thomas, Couture, Jean-Leon Gerome, and others. She spent a significant part of her adult life in France. When in France, she initially befriended Edgar Degas, a famous French artist, and later her works were exhibited among other impressionists. There are many inspirational women artists throughout history, including famous women artists such Artemisia Gentileschi and Georgia O’Keeffe. When searching for famous female artists that stood out to me, I found Frida Kahlo, and Barbara Kruger. Two very contrasting type of artists, though both extremely artistic. Both of these artists are known to be feminists, and displayed their issues through painting and photography. Frida Kahlo and Barbara Kruger’s social and historical significance will be discussed.
Throughout history art has played a major role in society. It started out with paintings and went to photography and eventually to films. Artistic interpretation depended on whom the artist was and what he or she wanted to present to the audience. When it came to portraiture, whether it was paintings or photography, the idea of mimesis was very important. However important this may have been, the portraits were mostly products of the media and fashions during that time period. Whatever was popular during the time was used such as columns or curtains in the background. The face was the main focus in the painting and there was little focus on the body. Later on during photography the body was focused on more. Even though photography was used much later after paintings were used, it allowed the artist even more artistic interpretation because of the ability to play a different role and not having to be ones self. The artists that will be focused on are Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman. They lived during different periods and their artistic intentions varied because of that. They also had similarities in that they thought outside of the conventional roles. These women were both self-portraiture artists and although they were considered that their interpretations did not always make their portraits self-portraits. Traditionally the artist was an outsider, but when it came to self-portraiture they became the subject and the audience became the outsider. The similarities and differences of Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman’s art were tied into the strength and also vulnerability they had because of their roles as women. They wanted the audience to see a background story to the portraits and not just an image of a beautiful face.

Cassatt lived for many years in France after her successful career, which ended abruptly when she went blind. Georgia O'Keeffe is a 20th century American painter best known for her flower canvases and southwestern landscapes. For many decades she remained a major figure in American art. Astonishingly, she continued and independent artist even through the shifting art trends and remained true to her own unique vision. She always seemed to focus on finding the basic and essential, abstract forms in nature.
Art provokes oneself to express a feeling that one has encountered in their lifetime and allows the artist to display their masterpiece for an observer to connect to. Artist Berthe Morisot once said, “It is important to express oneself… provided the feelings are real and are taken from your own experience”. Barbara Kruger is an American conceptual artist and collagist born in 1945 in New Jersey. Her work consisting of black-and-white photographs overlaid with captions in white-on-red. Her works, usually addressing and challenging cultural constructions of power, sexuality, and politics, marks her as one of the most significant figures in Feminist Art. Three of her most popular works were Untitled (You are not yourself), Untitled (Your body is a battleground), and Untitled (Questions).

A collage is any Images of words, pictures, Items, quotes that are put together/ combined to express about yourself or anything. The subject of my collage is about ourselves. The first step I did to start my collage is painted a layer on. I made swirls around the painting . After that I put on the second layer but went diagonal across the canvas. Then I blowed dryed it, and I did the swirls again as my 3rd layer. Once that was all dried I started to paste on the words I have chosen for my collage.
