A journey or adventure can be helpful for many to discover themselves or to prove something to the world. Adam Shepard, a college graduate, wanted to prove a specific point that many people argue about today in his non-fiction memoir, Scratch Beginnings. He wanted to show the world that the American Dream was in fact true by demonstrating how to get out of poverty. Another person who many believe made an impact was Christopher McCandless. McCandless was from a very wealthy but separated family. He decided to leave his family to become his own individual by making a goal to reach Alaska. Christopher’s adventure was made into a film by the name of Into the Wild. Christopher McCandless’s “goal” was to reach Alaska and to get away from his past life by creating an alternative one. His main purpose was to stop depending on his parents that he despised. Although he went on his journey to separate, in the end he realizes that, true happiness is only shared with the ones you love. That end result was not what Christopher was looking for but that is what he and society took out of the journey. On the other hand, Adam Shepard wanted to show everyone around the world that the American Dream was real, you just need the right attitude. He proves his theory by going from a stable state of living to only having twenty-five dollars to his name, to working hard and meeting people to help him move back up the social classes. His heart and work ethic was what he wanted to show the others in that position that a great mentality can take someone a long way.
