In the short story Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, a thirty-seven-year-old man named Charlie Gordon has a low intelligence level. Charlie is chosen for an operation(after taking many tests) that could increase his intelligence level. Algernon(a white mouse) had the same operation done on him. The first test Algernon has to run through a maze while Charlie does one on paper. When Charlie loses to Algernon, he begs for the operation. After Charlie has his operation, he becomes insanely smart and can beat Algernon without even trying. Months after the operation things start to go downhill for Charlie and Algernon. Charlie's operation had a large impact on his overall character. Before the operation, Charlie had trouble with spelling and grammar along with containing lots of information for long periods at a time. He wrote in a progress report "I had a test today. I think I faled it"(Keyes). The text shows that Charlie has trouble writing sentences with proper grammar. After the operation, Charlie is now using phrases such as "the mathematical variance equivalent in Dobermans Fifth Concerto"(Keyes). About two months after the operation Charlie's IQ has tripled from 68 to 204. He has become insanely smart and is helping boost production at the factory he is working at. Later he quits his job to help further the Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss research. While working on his research, he learns that Algernon has died and becomes worried about his fate. At the start of the story, Charlie is very hard on himself, he is disappointed anytime he does badly on a test or anything he can fail at. He states in the text" I was very skared even tho I had my rabits foot in my pockit because when I was a kid I always faled tests in school and I spillled ink to"(Keyes). The text shows how that Charlie has little confidence in doing a simple task such as taking a test or solving a maze. After the operation, as Charlie's intelligence grows he grows cold, arrogant and disagreeable. For a period of time, he would sit alone in his lab and wouldn't communicate with anyone.
