While I came upon reading the short story Flowers for Algernon I realized that the surgery Charlie had done, made his life worse. I believe that because the way he lived his life decreased. Charlie Gordon no longer was able to experience regular human contact or human interaction. Charlie didn't have to work hard to be smart or work hard to retain information it was all done for him. When something is done for you, you don’t have to work for that something. Charlie Gordon had a dream to become smart. In order to achieve his dream, he worked hard, study, and tried his best to become smart. After he got the surgery he lost his drive to do anything, to talk to people, and to learn new things. A recent paper published by Your Daily Microdose of Genius stated,”Being smarter does not make you better at transcending unjustified views and bad beliefs, all of which naturally then play into your life. Smarter people are better able to narrate themselves, internally, out of inconsistencies, blunders and obvious failures at rationality, whereas they would probably be highly critical of others who demonstrated similar blunders.” In other words, being smart has its positives and negatives. However, Charlie’s smartness has more negatives than positives. For example, when Charlie’s IQ started to increase his way of life decreased. As he became smarter he became less social, was exposed to more emotions and feelings, and he was less driven to improve. He could read a whole book in one night, learned to speak different languages and could memorize and remember things from the past. Before he had the surgery he thought everyone was nice and that no one could do any harm. After, he realized what people were actually doing. For example, he realized that his doctors only did the surgery on him for an experiment not because they wanted to give him a chance to live his dream. Another thing that had changed about him was his feelings. He developed emotions and feeling that he never had before. For example, when Charlie got the chance to go on a date with his teacher Miss Kinnian, he realized that he was in love with her. He said, “I don't understand why I never noticed how beautiful Miss Kinnian really is. She has brown eyes and feathery brown hair that comes to the top of her neck.
