The story follows the main characters who are Dee, Maggie and Mama. Maggie is a humble character who leads a simple life without the knowledge and opportunities like Dee had. Dee is Maggie’s older sister, and is said to be a very educated and determined to get what she wants. Heritage is something that people see in various ways. When many people think of heritage they think of past generation and where their family comes from. Other people place their heritage on the value of things, such as old quits that are made from something sentimental. In Everyday Use this is exactly how Maggie thinks of heritage. She wants the quits that were handmade out of her grandma’s dresses because to her that is a sign of her heritage. Alice Walker’s story is based on heritage. The narrator of the story has two daughters who could not be more different. One daughter, Dee, is beautiful and cares a lot about finding her place in the world, and about fashion. Maggie on the other hand is very practical. She does not see any reason for fashion and is okay with her placement in this world. This is because she is like her mother. Her mother is someone who has had to work very hard to provide for her daughters. She prefers the hard work and takes pride in what she is able to do. When Maggie comes back to visit she brings her abnormal husband with her. She has changed her name and all of a sudden cares a lot about her heritage. She keeps asking to take things that she knows have been in the family for a while. Her mom is okay with this until she tries to take the quilts that she has already offered to Maggie as a wedding present. This is the last straw for her mom and she tells Dee no, which causes Dee to get angry because she knows that Maggie will actually use the blankets and they will fall apart in a few years. These things often remind a person of a beloved grandparent or great-grandparent and are seen as priceless. In Alice Walker's "Everyday Use," the family heirloom, a couple of hand sewn quilts, represents the family members' emotions concerning their heritage. Dee may believe that she has won in some way because she is the educated sister who appreciates her heritage, but the reader sees it is in fact Maggie who has become victorious by having her way of life validated by Mama’s support and Dee’s envy. Maggie’s system of values is redeemed by creating a new relationship, with herself, in which she is no longer silenced and can truly appreciate the beauty of her home even in its everyday use. While there is little growth seen from the experience on Dee’s side, we know that Maggie is forever changed, giving her more power than she ever had. There is still and will always be a struggle between her and her sister, but Maggie now knows she does not need redemption from Dee, nor anyone else, because it is she who carries the importance of the past into the future.
The story of “Everyday Use” stresses the use of a moral code by Mama’s decision. Mama decides to give the family treasures, butter churn and two quilts, to Maggie due to the fact that Maggie’s older sister, Dee, would only use them as decoration instead of using them. Dee says “I can use the churn top as a centerpiece for the alcove table…and I’ll think of something artistic to do with the dasher.” And later on Dee begins to dig through Mama’s trunk to find two quilts that she is going to hang up instead of use. When Dee asks to have them Mama thinks it through and makes a similar decision to Laurence S. Pertillar, “To recognize the difference between wants and needs, /Is the first step in weeding away fluff stuff./And that which feeds on ego with late charges to make, /Attached to overdraft fees. /Awakening to the basicness of happiness, /Relieves one from nightmares of attempting to make ends meet.” She tells Dee no because Maggie will actually use the quilts.
Symbols are displayed in both stories; the quilts in “Everyday Use” symbolize the memories of Mama’s family. The quilts are made of pieces of old clothing from Mama’s family. Each piece of the quilt represents that person and who they were. They are passed on to future generations along with stories of the ancestors’ past.
