Summary: The Road by Cormac McCarthy, describes the life of man and his son who are on a quest to find a safe haven for the both of them. The story takes place in a post apocalyptic world, that was destroyed by a deadly world war. The father is sick for most of the journey, but his persistence on finding a safe place for his son, makes him keep fighting through the dangerous journey. The journey is very hard on both the men, supplies are very hard to find, since most of humanity is dead, and the leftover supplies are being scavenged by all those who are still alive. They have a map that will lead them to a coast where they hope on finding a more lively environment, but that wouldn’t be easy for them …show more content…

#4 Symbolism
“Keep a little fire burning; however small, however hidden.” Pg.140
The fire was more than just an inanimate object. It brought purpose to the journey, it kept the boy and his father going throughout the struggles that they faced everyday. When McCarty wrote “keep the little fire burning; however small, however hidden”, it was a way of hope and persistence that reminded the father and son, of the life they still had.

“The wind sounded of Mother Earth's forsaken and abandoned cries.” Pg.87

The plot of the story indicated that the world has been destroyed after a major war, which had killed off most life on the planet. The effect on saying that “Mother Earth” was crying, explained the damage that was left for those that were still alive.
