I will discuss the inspiration drawn from Cézanne’s The Large Bathers and how both Matisse and Picasso used that influence in their own paintings. Their paintings came, not much later, in time, to when Cézanne finished his The Large Bathers painting.

First, a look at The Large Bathers, which Cezanne completed in 1906, according to the video narrated by Beth Harris and Steve Zucker, Cezanne’s goal was to paint a nude in a modern environment. And while parts of the canvas were unfinished, they believed that Cezanne, who started as an impressionist, reaches for a classicism pose for the nude bodies found in the painting. Fauve style painting is defined as using color and letting it stand on its own, drawing strong and unified perspective to each element on the canvas. It also valued individual expression. In the essay by Beth Harris and Steve Zucker, Bonheur de Vivre, they discuss the vibrant scenery’s colors and moving nudes within the painting, and liken it as the closest to Cézanne’s The Large Bathers. They do note the difference between Cézanne’s bathers and Matisse’s nudes, as having contour and movement like appearance from the scenery, which some considered daring, at the time. While the subjects in Matisse’s painting are also of uneven proportion and the scale is visible off, the scenery is more cohesive because of the colors used. Though the difference between Cézanne and Matisse’s paintings are not just the color schemes, subjects, and the sceneries, but also the shifting perspectives, which were more inviting to the viewer, pulling the viewer into the scene.
