Censorship is around all the time but it can go unnoticed since people have gotten used to it. Ever feel restricted to items? Offended that materials are being taken away or rules are being set because some people see it as offensive. Censorship is fought a lot because some people stick up for their First Amendment rights. Censorship is the act of abolishing or removing certain information or anything offensive or seen as a threat or inappropriate to a person. It goes against the First Amendment rights (Taylor 8). Censoring happens everywhere, like in families, public places such as a movie theater, and also in schools. In schools it is a little bit easier to censor because they try to remain as neutral and not go on a side or touch any topics that can cause controversy. Censorship is needed in schools to an extent, and student rights have been tested by the Supreme Court so limits have been set although in certain situations the censoring was not necessary. Censorship is the act of removing items or ideas and the First Amendment helps fight it because there are certains right people have and that cannot be interfered with. People censor subjects that are found inappropriate due to language or content. The content cannot be about political or religious matter that can be sensitive and should not be brought up (Emert). In school censoring comes up to keep the education nice and calm and not be opinionated on life things such as social, political, or religious subjects. Anyone can censor basically. In school the board of education, principal, librarians, and teachers, on the other hand in public you have the police officers or other people with power like the government can censor. Also in movie theaters or parents at home censor (... ... middle of paper ... ... the shirt was to make a political statement in which he has the right to do so (Nguyen). At first the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont decided against Guiles but then Guiles appealed his case and the court decided in his favor by saying the drug and alcohol were not a disruption and that there was only one person who complained so the court could not side with the school (Nguyen). Another dress code case was the Bivens v. Albuquerque. His problem was with sagging pants which now is something a lot of guys do. Now the boundary is set so schools can see what they can do about the sagging pants. It started when Richard Bivens got suspended from school because of sagging his pants. Bivens’ mom was not happy to hear that and sued the school. The school long termed suspended him because the school was starting to have a growing problem of gangs (Truly 10).
