Not every misdeed in the novella can be directly attributed to Dr. Jekyll, however. Several of the misfortunes can be traced back to the addiction that Jekyll develops. For example, one of the offenses that Jekyll shouldn’t take the fault for is the murder of Carew. While he does voluntarily transform in a moment of weakness, Mr. Hyde “had been long caged, and came out roaring” (Stevenson 121).
