Castle On The Hill is a happy, uplifting song about friendship, which plays a big role in Bruno’s life. The book doesn't focus much on his past relationship with his friends back home, but the story creates the idea that Bruno had an amazing childhood with his friends. Although, the book does point out that Bruno does not have many friends, so maybe his childhood wasn’t as sweet and happy as book makes it out to be. In the book, Bruno often seems unaware, and doesn't really know how to talk to others. This may be an indication that he isn't very social and possibly quite shy. The lyrics of the song are, “Somebody stole my car radio, and now I just sit in silence.” A car radio plays music in your long, awful travels. The radio brings happiness, light and emotion to your day. Car Radio is a metaphor for these happy emotions. The german soldiers stole Shmuel’s happiness and sound from him when they imprisoned him. Then he had nothing to do except to sit silently. Car Radio is an explanation of why Shmuel is so quiet. He has nothing to do.

Shmuel was kept behind the fence, and was starving. The lyrics read, “Help I need somebody, help, not just anybody.” Shmuel throughout the book, desperately needs help. He needs help from Bruno. Bruno made him happy. Bruno kept him alive. Everyday, Bruno would bring Shmuel food so he would not starve. Everyone at the concentration camp should be calling out for help, and they were. Shmuel went through some very tough times. He was forced to work, he lost his dad, he was taking away from his life. I can only begin to imagine how much he needed help. No 9 year old boy should have to go through an experience like this. Then again, nobody should. Help! Is an overall good song for Shmuel to connect with. The song is about calling out for help, which Shmuel definitely did throughout this
