Cassius Clay Jr. was born in the segregated southern city of Louisville, Kentucky. He started boxing at around the age of twelve to stand up to kids that would try to bully him and steal his bicycle. Boxing gave Clay a way to release his anger in a safe way. When he was 18 years old he became the Olympic champion. By age 20 he was one of the most successful athletes in history. He was a great vocal supporter of civil rights struggle, a big supporter of Black Power. Muhammed Ali was one of the most well-known athletes to use their fame to support a controversial struggle.

One of Muhammad's biggest obstacles from him becoming the great boxer he is today was his fear of flying. If he didn’t overcome this obstacle he probably would not be as well known as he is today. It almost stopped him from becoming an Olympic champion at Rome in 1960. He passed that obstacle and ended up winning the gold medal easily. He was a boxer that was so depended on his legs with gave him great speed. Nobody was ready for him when he went into the ring because he wouldn’t stop moving until the fight was over. For example, when Muhammad was fighting Floyd Patterson he decided to not take the match seriously instead he humiliated him. He ran circles around Patterson and kept taunting him. He dragged the match out twelve rounds before the referee had to step in and end the match. This was when he started to show off to his fans saying that his opponents are not worthy to fight him. During the World Heavy Championship when Muhammad Ali was fighting against Sonny Liston when Muhammad was dogging all of his punches.
