Michael Novak once said, "Capitalism must be infused by that humble gift of love called caritas". Historically, capitalism has been criticized a lot. Some criticize capitalism for religious reasons; others criticize it for its lack of justice. Money is a dominant factor in most people's lives in this day and age, no matter where they come from. Should money and materialistic amenities really hold such a big place in our hearts and lives? This is what Hanif Kureishi portrays in his short story “The Decline of the West”, which deals with the ethic aspects of capitalism.

The narrator of the story is non-omniscient, but also limited because we, as readers, do not know anything about the other people in the story’s thoughts, and this results in us sympathizing with Mike.
Other than Mike and Imogen, there are two characters involved in the story, Tom and Bill, who are both subordinate characters, and they are the sons of Mike and Imogen. At some point in the story Mike’s son, Tom, asks his father “what have you ever done for me?” the son is talking about how Mike always give them materialistic amenities, and that he never does anything for them out of love or affection. These kids simply do not have a father-role in their

The first sentence of the short story is “The tube journey had been one of the most desolate Mike had endured”, and in a tube journey there is often some sort of claustrophobic atmosphere. There is also a lot of foreshadowing in the first couple of sentences of the story. The fact that the author wants to tell us that Mike is going to go through a ‘journey’, and a journey is often interpreted as a ‘journey through life’, and as readers we will be expecting that there will happen a change in the plot. We are also told, that this journey is the most desolate that Mike has endured, and this loneliness that Mike is experiencing tells us something about his mental state. He is feeling lonely, because he has suffered from lack of love throughout his life. There is a dramatic change in the scenery and atmosphere of the story, when Mike chooses to go down to the basement of his house, because the whole style in which the story is written, changes. There is also some symbolism in this, because when someone goes down into their basement, that is the lowest they can go. We can say about Mike, that he has “hit rock bottom”. There is a fake-ness, to some extent, portrayed in this short story. This is very evident on the first page of the story where the author describes the house as having a “hyper-shiny elegant dining room table”. This shows us that this family looks perfect, if you look at them from the
Mikes father had died when he was only a little boy and you’d never believe it by looking at his mental state. The financial problems he went through being that he left an exceptional job in place for volunteering all his time toward Klal Yisroel, was only something such a holy person could handle.
Using Omniscient narration Braddon allows us to delve into the mind of the protagonist without actually being in his perspective. This literary device is displayed when the narrator said “But he is a genius and a metaphysician—grief, true grief, is not for one such as he.” Which gave a deeper look into the protagonists mind and him trying to convince himself that he “he was no worse off than he was yesterday.” and showed him struggling with the loss and attempting to tell himself he was well. (Braddon 140)This device was further utilized when the narrator continually stated “he has forgotten” when directed at thoughts of his cousin, which the repetition of it displays his false lack of recollection of her. (Braddon 141) The

It gives you the illusion that you have a certain power because you are in possession of money, but in fact the society is constructed in order that you spend this money. This is the definition of ideology that gives Karl Marx. According to him, ideology is an illusory knowledge, a false consciousness. In a capitalism system, the power is detained by ruling class that will makes you think you are free, when in reality you are under their control. This theory has been illustrated in the movie ‘They live’, where they depict the capitalism society and its impact on the citizens.
To begin, capitalism is the economic ideology that everything is primarily focused towards making profit through the production and distribution of a product. In the article “Capitalism: Where Do We Come From?” By Robert Heilbroner and Lester Thurow, they provide insight on how capitalism has changed over the years and the impact it now has in today’s society. “There were no factors of production before capitalism. Of course, human labour, nature’s gift of land and natural resources, and the artifacts of society have always existed. But labour, land, and capital were not commodities for sale” (Para,17). Capitalism has an impact in my life because in the 21st century children are taught in school skills that will benefit businesses, so that they can continue to make a profit through the production and distribution

When people think of capitalism many think of a greedy, money hungry, overweight man. Capitalism obtained a bad reputation that goes back to the mid 19th century. The stereotype is a product of robber barons; the people that created large amounts of wealth by participating in unfair business practices. Robber barons are one reason for which society perceives wealthy people as uncaring, rude, and selfish. They are known for having unethical businesses that corrupted the government and took advantage of both the consumer and the worker (Mises Institute). The truth is that although many of the conceptions of corrupt ancient business owners is true, capitalism is the best economic system in existence as well as the most moral oriented.
