Executing criminals has been a form of punishment since ancient times. It was used to keep the civilizations in line, progressing, and successful. When the laws do not enforce the safety of the nation, people will take advantage, and the nation will not be protected, therefore the government has not done its' duty to protect citizens. Is the government protecting future victims by showing criminals that taking an innocent life is justified by letting them keep theirs? Capital punishment, the execution of criminals by the state for heinous murders, is the only acceptable form of punishment for such acts of atrocity. The opponents of capital punishment believe this to be immoral and non-productive, however advocates of capital punishment have proven this to be effective, and a deterrent of future murders.

Capital punishment is a highly controversial topic, and the general public has been drastically losing confidence in it. Violent crimes and murder are part of the cruelest, most inhuman and horrific crimes that exist and the violate the victim’s right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. The death penalty was reinstituted in 1976 by the supreme court after it was stopped for 4 years ( Liptak 2). In 1972, there was 600 prisoners on death row that had their sentences reduced to life sentences with a chance of parole ( Dieter 7). In a poll done by the death penalty information center, 27% said that the possibility of an innocent being executed lessens their support, and 26% said it takes too long ( Dieter 8). The Bible requires death for many crimes including murder, rape, and adultery(Robinson 1). In research done by the death penalty center, since 1976, 56% percent of the criminal executed were white and 35%...

The death penalty come down to a persons morals and what they believe in. They can look at all the information and it might not change their mind until it actually happens to them. When it does happen they will hopefully look back at the information presented to them and realize that it was more correct then what they previously thought. In the constitution it states the duty of government is to protect the citizens of the United States. The death penalty assures this safety and prevents future murders from happening. Hopefully justice continues to be served to all, and that the citizens of the United States will realize how important it is to keep the death penalty. Therefore Capital punishment, the execution of criminals by the state for heinous murders, is the only acceptable form of punishment for atrocious acts.
