Brain Based Nutrition Lesson
BACKGROUND
I teach English as a second language to adult migrants in Australia. As such, my students are a diverse population from all over the world. they come from a variety of different generations, within multiple socioeconomic groups, and from various educational backgrounds. The Navitas program I work for, offers 3 different certificate levels designed to provide students with a proficient level of English. My course leads students to a certificate II in spoken and written English.

A month and a half ago we did a short lesson on nutrition. It was part of our food and grocery unit. For the lesson, I invited a local nutritionist to come do a short ten-minute talk with my students. Next, I asked my students to do a think-pair-share exercise. They paired with a partner and independently thought of a meal they had last week. Then, they discussed how they could improve the meal to make it more nutritious. Using Eric Jensen’s teaching model (Jensen, 2005), I have reconstructed this lesson to follow a brain based compatible lesson plan.

The seating, temperature, lighting, and noise around us can affect our brains. Thus, it is imperative to ensure before every lesson that our teaching environment is comfortable. I support a welcoming i classroom. I enforce class rules to respect one and another. All my students should feel safe and secure in my class. I also arrange my seating in a semi-circle or circle to create an environment that promotes discussion. I want to ensure my students feel comfortable asking questions and participating. Furthermore, I keep the classroom light and bright by opening the blinds to let in the natural light from outside.
