Between the two years 2010-2011 the book Speak was challenged as the website Book Challenged or Banned in 2010-2011 also say the book was ‘Challenged in Republic, Mo. schools”.The reason why the book had been challenged was because a “[P]rofessor in Missouri who thought the two rape scenes were too graphic/mature”. Also in another source named syracuse.com reportes that “Earlier in September, a Missouri State University professor, Wesley Scroggins, in an opinion column in the Missouri News-Leader, encouraged schools to ban ‘Speak’ and two other books, which he said ‘should be classified as soft pornography”(Dave Tobin). Throughout this book, rhetoric affects multiple characters in both positive and negative ways. There are instances in this book in which one can see how words have the ability to tear people down, educate and inform, and to inspire individuals to follow their dreams.
On April 3, 1964, Malcom X published his famous speech named “The Ballot or the Bullet” and on 1963, the author Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a letter from jail to respond to eight white clergymen, who criticism him for unwise, untimely and extreme. The purposes of both writers are fight for civil rights and black liberation. They both use ethos, pathos and logos in their writings, which extremely useful in getting to their point to persuade the audiences to fight for their belief. Despite there are different between how they use these strategies but both use it very effective and produce very persuasive writings.
In the book “look me in the eyes” by John Elder Robison, he talks about his life with Asperger’s and the challenged he faced as a kid. The first thing I noticed when reading the book that John Elder had a hard time looking people in the eye. Which is very common with kids with Asperger’s. During the time her was a student teachers didn’t know what this was so they handled the situation differently by yelling at him trying to force him to look them in the eye. If I was the teacher I would go about this situation differently I would try to figure out why he can’t look me in the eyes. In the novel, “Unbroken,” by Laura Hildenbrand, Louis Zamperini struggles to overcome many challenges during WWII. Zamperini was a troubled child. He completely disregarded authority and had a difficult time controlling his temper. His brother, Pete, wanted to keep him out of trouble, so he distracted him with running. Louis fell in love with the sport. After having a successful career as an athlete and joining the olympics, Zamperini, was drafted into the Air force. Along with the challenges brought by war, Zamperini faced unusual circumstances as his plane had mechanical issues and crashed near Oahu. Of the eleven men aboard the plane, three survived and were stranded at sea for forty seven days. Zamperini was one of them. After being stranded, he was picked up by the Japanese navy and taken to a prisoner of war camp where he was tortured. He was held there until the end of the war. The events in Zamperini’s childhood led him to become a courageous and fearless adult. His drive, commitment, hope, and resolve kept him alive and thriving through each of these situations.
In Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson develops the idea that you should learn to speak for yourself and admit your past to others so you can move on to your future, and your life. The main character is named Melinda Sordino, her first day of highschool wasn’t the best day she thought it would be. Everyone that was best friends with her, now turned into her ex-friends. Many people think that reading more can help them to think and develop before writing something. Others might think that they don’t need to read and or write that it can really help them to brainstorm things a lot quicker and to develop their own ideas immediately (right away). The author’s purpose of Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, is to understand the concepts, strategies and understandings of how to always read first and then start something. The importance of this essay is to understand and comprehend our reading and writing skills by brainstorming our ideas and thoughts a lot quicker. In other words, we must always try to read first before we can brainstorm some ideas and to think before we write something. There are many reasons why I chose Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, by many ways that reading can help you to comprehend, writing, can help you to evaluate and summarize things after reading a passage, if you read, it can help you to write things better and as you read, it can help you to think and evaluate of what to write about.
In addition, she contradicts her own stance on the position when she mentions that previous literature containing sexually explicit content should not be censored (Brownmiller 59). Brownmiller paints a very strong, emotional, and offensive picture when she claims that women are, “being stripped, bound, raped, tortured, mutilated, and murdered in the name of commercial entertainment” (59). However, this statement is fallacious and does not provide any factual evidence. Furthermore, she makes the hasty generalization that pornography can make people think that certain things, such as rape, are acceptable (Brownmiller 59). Once again, her claim lacks support and relies solely on a faulty pathos appeal.
The novel was challenged at Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Florida in 2007. It was challenged by John and Anna Ferrell. They wanted it banned because “They use the f-word everywhere else. That's unacceptable” (Weeder). They felt that the book was inappropriate because of the constant swearing. The book was kept in the school. The decision was justified because in the end it is the principal's decision. One must respect that.
Banning a book on the basis of profanity is merely a superficial reason of those who wish to limit beliefs that do not coincide with their own. By excluding a novel from a high school curriculum in order to shelter students from profanity, is an attempt to do the impossible. Profanity is found everywhere. As the first chapter in this long analytical book, chapter one serves as the foundation for the rest of the novel, with a basic premise that “history textbooks make fool out of the students.” It shows how portrayal of historical figures and events in the best light for the reputation of United States leads to biased and distorted historical education.
There are many reasons why books get challenged and/or banned. According to Robert Doyle, the main reasons for banned are sex, profanity, and racism (Doyle, 3). The most common initiator of the challenge is a parent or group of parents (Challenges by, chart 2). Challenges can also come from: patrons, board members, or organizations (Challenges by, chart 2). Challenges can also come from whole institutions; usually they come from schools (Challenges by, chart 3).
For our assignment, I chose to be blind. This was a tough assignment, however a very humbling one. First, while I thought this chose was the easiest of the three, after just ten minutes I felt lost and helpless. My thoughts went to how I was going to complete anything for myself. So I tried to get up and move to the kitchen to get a drink of water and needless to say I ran into many objects that I thought I knew where they were located, however my senses were off by just the simple thing of being blindfolded.

When it comes to children books, fictional children books are definitely one of the more popular types for kids. In Cover to Cover by Kathleen Horning, she defines fiction as types of books that “offer a rich diversity of style, content, and form to satisfy a variety of tastes, interests, and abilities of young readers” (Horning 138). The book that I chose that I feel relates well with Horning’s definition of fiction is Katherine Paterson’s story Bridge to Terabithia for a couple of reasons. One of them is that Horning talks about how fictional books have many genres and one of them is fantasy Paterson’s story. I believe this fits well with how Horning describes fantasy fiction books.
