Born to a family that despises you because you’re different. Taunted and bullied at a university by your own roommate and her friends. The death of a genius that you worked for. On the run for five years in order to destroy your country’s leader. Falling in love with a man that you met at the university. Your lover murdered for something he didn’t want to be apart of… Sound’s like a lot of fun, huh. Yeah, that’s what I said. But let’s be professional, here.

As I read Wicked by Gregory Maguire, I learned a couple things. The first thing I noticed, was the book’s size. I picked it up and saw that it was rather thin than the other books I’ve read.

They’re personalities change as the years go by, which I’ve never really seen before. Although, I’ve never seen Gregory Maguire’s style of writing in a newer book until now. The character’s speech patterns aren’t what we’re used to, making it rather hard to read at times.
“My dear Miss Elphaba, I am bade to write you by my hostess the Misses Pfannee of Pfann Hall and Shenshen of the Minkos Clan. We are having a lovely summer at Lake Chorge. The air is calm and sweet and all is as pleasant as anything...Just arrive by coach at Neverdale and come by foot or hire a hansom cab, it’s just a mile or two by the bridge (Maguire 117)…” I had a very hard time getting through this book (not just because it was longer than expected), mostly because it felt slow. There wasn’t a Climax that I could point out. If I was to summarize the book, I would say it was about Elphaba’s early years, including school, and how the experiences in her past pushed her to change what she believed needed to be changed.
