My exploration of medicine began as I grew up shadowing my father, who is a medical physicist. I became fascinated with the advances in medicine that bring phenomenal care to those that need it. My interactions with other physicians drew me closer to the profession as I observed their character, lifestyle, and the service they provided to people each day. As I thought of how I could contribute to society for the rest of my life, nothing made me more excited than becoming a physician.
College was the next step I needed to take in pursuing my dream of becoming a physician. Upon acceptance to Brigham Young University, I pursued a Biochemistry degree, knowing it would be a great challenge. My chemistry classes proved to be the most difficult for me, but as I worked hard and studied, chemistry became one of my strengths. As I learned more about how our bodies functioned on a biochemical level, medicine became more intriguing to me. I had the opportunity to serve the people in British Columbia, Canada. While in Canada, I frequently met and became acquainted with people who came from poor socioeconomic status. The time I spent with them helped me realize that there was more to health care than going to a hospital or doctor to be treated for an illness. Though everyone I came in contact with had access to health care facilities and health insurance, people from the lower class still suffered from poor health due to a lack of fitness, nutritional food, employment assistance, education, and housing. I quickly learned that true health care was a team effort between a variety of health providers. As physicians, nurses, biomedical researchers and other health care providers collaborate together, we can achieve superior health care that will benefit millions of
