In early 20th century, many countries were not in a good situation because of major world wars and thus, people in the developing countries had a difficulty with living because they had lack of money, which most likely dreamed about American Dream. As these immigrants settle up a family, there are differences such as cultural between two generations. Since their grown up backgrounds are different, the primary dreams or goals are different. Big Money, by Dinaw Mengestu, not only conveys the foreigner’s American Dream but also the cultural difference of a family nicely. Also, this novel conveys the idea of cultural difference of two generations. As it was mentioned previously, American Dream was a dream for many foreigners since America is one of the wealthiest countries in the world and they will be able to earn a “big” money. The relationship between the author’s father and his workers thoroughly shows the idea of foreigners dreaming about American Dream. As the author mentions about the humongous size of Chicago, he says what else would the owner, his father, and the workers more desire in the city when they already achieved their dream, which is residing in the big city with earning a “big” money. Then, the author says that “money was always the object of the sentence, it was only its size that mattered.” Based on these sayings, money was the most important to the immigrants and their dream. Moreover, the writer writes as “I was given a cheque disproportionately larger than what I deserved and perhaps even disproportionately larger than what he could afford.” This sentence definitely displays that in America, one can earn more money than in his motherland.
