Beowulf is Healfdane’s son and Higlac’s follower, the strongest of the Geats. Throughout the reading of this epic poem about Beowulf, he goes through three battles which develops him into a heroic character. Each battle is fought with different weapons, techniques winning him different rewards which show how he emerges into an epic hero. In fact Beowulf was a life changer for Geats, evolving him into the Beowulf Tower. Grendel was born out of the slime, and conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Caine. He’s a demon that no crime or evil could ever be enough for. Grendel comes up from his swamplands into Herot hall where soldiers slept. Intending by morning those bodies would be lifeless. “But fate that night intended Grendel to gnaw the broken bones of his last human supper” (Pg.56 lines 294-295). Intriguing Beowulf’s greed and glory he goes after her into her deep watery world. “Then she carried him, armor, and sword, and all, to her home… Then he realized, suddenly that she’d brought him into someone’s battle-hall, in there the water’s heat could not harm him…” (pg. 60 433-439). The she-wolf, Grendel’s mother took Beowulf expecting an easy kill. But Grendel’s mother wasn’t as simple to kill either Beowulf discovered. “But her guest discovered that no sword could slice her evil skin, that hrunting could not hurt her…” (pg. 60 451). Beowulf discovers her skin is invincible and no sword could penetrate her skin. Beowulf wouldn’t give up yet, he was going to kill her receiving fame. “He saw, hanging on the wall, a heavy sword, hammered by giants, and blessed with their magic, the best of all weapons…” (pg. 61 485).
