Beauty and the Beast is a Fantasy/Romance movie produced in 2016. The movie tells the romantic story of Belle (Emma Watson) who lives in a small town and dreams of a more exciting life. When her father goes to another town to sell some of his antiques and doesn’t come back, Belle is whisked away on an amazing, emotional adventure. Where she meets many interesting characters. Throughout of the scene in Paris, where Belle and the Beast visits Belle childhood home. The audience is positioned to feel empathy and sadness, but also hopefulness towards Belle. The main aspects that will be outlined in this essay are Lighting, Music and Symbolic Codes. The Lighting in the Paris scene is shown to light the character, but dim out everything else to show the character. The lighting enhances their facial expressions in the scene which consequently helps the audience to show empathy towards the character. This lighting makes the audience feel empathy towards her because everything else is shrouded in a dark, misty-like light and Belle’s the only bright thing in the house making her look hopeful but consequently shows that Belle is upset making the audience feel sympathy towards her. The music in this scene is at first very dramatic when it centres on the house when they are transporting then when it shows the inside of the house, it turns to calm and twinkly which makes the scene seem hopeful, but then they communicate about her mother then consequently find out that her mother was infected by plague, which turns the scene very sad and empathetic towards Belle.
