There are 3 basic divisions of the human brain that consist of multiple structures within themselves. The first is the forebrain. The forebrain surrounds the rostral end of the neural tube and contains the lateral and third ventricle. The subdivision of the lateral ventricle is called the telencephalon. This is a highly developed section of the brain that consists of the cerebral hemisphere. The subdivision of the third ventricle is called the diencephalon. Inside these subdivisions there are five different principle structures. The first is the cerebral cortex. The cerebral cortex is the outer layer of the cerebrum. It is also sometimes referred to as grey matter. A second structure would be the basal ganglia. These are responsible for the coordination of movement. The third …show more content…

The second division is called the midbrain. This consists of the cerebral aqueduct. It connects the third ventricle to the fourth ventricle and contains cerebrospinal fluid. The subdivision here is the mesencephalon. This is the area that controls vision, hearing, motor control, sleep and wakefulness, arousal and temperature regulation. The primary structure in the midbrain is called the tectum tegmentum which is in control of auditory and visual reflexes. Last but not least is the hindbrain. The fourth ventricle is in this part of the brain and there are two subdivisions. The first is metencephalon, and the second is the myelencephalon. The metencephalon gives way to the cerebellum and the pons. The cerebellum receives information from the sensory systems and develops it. This is responsible for things like posture, balance, coordination and speech. The pons are the bridge between the cerebellum and the cerebrum among other things. The third principle structure of the hindbrain is called the medulla oblongata. This is the structure that transfers messages to the spinal cord and the
