Awful Effects of Racism

What would this world be like if it was still segregated? Would there still be an excessive amount of racism? There are many horrible cases of racism on a daily basis all around the world. If this world was still segregated racism would definitely be a lot worse because of blacks and whites being segregated. Racism has been around since the early nineteen hundreds and is still very common to this day. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, racism is a very common theme that is shown in situations of segregation, the children in the town of Maycomb, and is still a popular topic in today's society.

For example, in To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus states, “nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don’t mean anything-like snot-nose. It’s hard to explain-ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody’s favoring Negroes over and above themselves. It’s slipped into usage with some people like ourselves, when they want a common, ugly term to label somebody”(Lee 124). In the book, Atticus is pretty much stating that people say the word, nigger just like snot-nose to be rude and label somebody that they believe they are better than. In the text, Racism in America, the author, Meghan Green explains, “After Obama's inauguration in January 2009, death threats against him soared, with the Secret Service fielding at least 30 each day. The overwhelming number of threats-much higher than those against any other president-stretched the Secret Service to the breaking point, as agents often worked longer hours to handle the increased workload”(Green 8). Therefore, racism is still a very common topic in today’s society, this was just recently in the year of 2009, which was nine years ago.
In conclusion, there are many negative effects of racism. Racism is portrayed through many horrific situations of segregation, experiences through children in schools, and most importantly it still sadly exists in our modern day society. Racism may be shown through opposite races being separated, children saying nigger in schools, and movements that are starting due to racism in our society. Hopefully, the dangers of racism stop very soon because it is just becoming worse and worse on a daily
