The basis of this research project stems from the semi- structured interviews that Ashley Hartmann conducted. She studied half on the perspectives of the siblings and that of the parent’s perspective and discovered various themes that arose from this study. In findings a total of 12 themes emerged between the siblings and parents; in the sibling interviews; knowledge of Autism, affect on relationships, feelings of sibling’s autism diagnosis, future care for sibling, meaning, acceptance and advice and extended family. In the parent’s interviews, feelings around autism, knowledge around autism, life changes, affect on relationships, support systems and acceptance, meaning and advice. She also highlights the stress that affects the family system, but also reveals the many resources and services to better assist these individuals and their family. This book was a great read. The heartwarming tale of two young children who manage to overcome the disability under the category of autism. The author, the mother of these two children, uses her language to make the reader feel connected with the struggles of the family and the elated feeling when the children are deemed functioning within normal levels. This book gives insight on several different therapies, some that seemed helpful and others that seemed silly. It touches on the subject of inclusion as well. This book allows individuals to relate to those who have children with autism and gives parents of children with autism hope that their child's disability is not a permanent one.
ASD individuals may find it hard to communicate and socialize with others around them. However, because each child is unique, they have their own unique abilities and ways of responding to new experiences. Other issues children with ASD have include; anxiety, sleeping problems, and learning disabilities. Those who are diagnosed with ASD or any other disability are usually judged and bullied. In the documentary Violet’s mother says she is afraid of her child being labeled and underestimated because she is diagnosed with autism. A child’s disability can also affect their family members. Family members may have a difficult time understanding and getting to know the autistic child in order to provide for them. They struggle to find interventions such as treatment and therapy for them, the right medical care, and trying learn to cope with all this. At times parents and caregivers can also feel stressed or irritated knowing they have to fulfill all of the child’s needs. Children with autism suffer a myriad of social, behavioral, and language abnormalities. An individual with such a dense profile can have a huge impact on the normal functioning of the family. In this short essay, I’ll present the reasons behind this abnormal profile of these individuals and the effects of such symptoms on the family adjustment and work load. Secondly, I’ll provide some suggestions that can help alleviate parental and siblings suffering during primary years of the child’s life.
I was responsible for implementing intervention for one child with autism, while also working with his typically developing sibling and interacting with their parents. Often times, this child had temper tantrums which taught me to quickly and effectively respond to his outbursts. This hands-on experience expanded my understanding as to how people adapt to a lifestyle when they have a family member that is not typically developing. In our society communication is a key component and vital to existence in success in this day in age. Not only communication but social skills, motor skills, and our basic senses are the platforms on which we build off of, well, in the world of autism communication is impacted and for that reason an audible disturbance can come off as a heavy impairment…..to the naked eye. In my experience working with autistic boys & girls has showed me the sheer beauty and honesty of how they communicate and relay their feelings and emotions. The autism spectrum disorder is commonly known. Autism has wide spectrum of severity ranging from low to high and in between. This literature review dissects the value of full functioning beings and autistic beings, and explains my interpretation of autism and their ability to find new components to life.

My mother worked in an integrated preschool that had kids with many different disabilities and also children without disabilities. Many of theses kids were diagnosed with autism, and a few that weren’t officially diagnosed but had many symptoms that could lead to a diagnosis of autism. I would go in every once in a while and help my mother and other teachers out when I was in high school. Around that time there was no diagnosis of ASD that I was aware of, it was simply known as autism. As I got older I was more and more aware of the fact that there was a wide range of autism based on the functionality of each individual. Some were high functioning and able to do most things by themselves where as others were heavily dependent on caregivers all day. I think that is when I really became more fascinated by ASD because it wasn’t a cookie cutter diagnosis; there wasn’t a set regiment for diagnosing or treating individuals with ASD. This paper is the most in-depth research I have done on ASD and have learned so much more about this diagnosis, which may come along with all the research that has been done since the last time I did a project about ASD. But these projects were also not as focused on treatments or as keen on the research part of ASD they were more of just what is autism and who can be diagnosed with
This study will explore the single mothers perceptions of social support relative to raising a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. It will use a qualitative framework with grounded theory methods. Two well-researched stressors exist that affect the lives of single mothers of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder: parenting a child with special needs and being a single mother. Boss’(2002, 2006, 2008) theory of ambiguous loss, the ambiguity about a family member’s presence or absence in the family system, served as some of the constructs for this study. A sample of 16 single mothers with a child or children diagnosed with autism in school-age special education programs ranging from 3 to 21 years of age will take part in an in- depth, semi structured interview utilizing an interview guide based on the literature of mothers with children with autism and single motherhood. Interviews will be audio taped and transcribed and data analysis will be done by using open coding. Through this the identification of variables that are descriptive of the mothers’ experiences will be identified. There will be three primary findings to this study: 1) the concept of High Information Seeking emerged. This is defined as , Through this concept, the mothers clearly redefined their role of advocacy and autism, in essence moving towards a change in the social construct of autism as defined in the single-parent family; 2) the mothers’ perceptions of positive support differed between familial and external resources (e.g. school based support teams, friends, online support groups); and 3) ...
What is Autism? People are quick to label people as Autistic but very rarely understand what it means though they may nod their head and say "ohh makes sense". Autism - also know as ASD, Autism Spectrum Disorder- is a complex developmental disorder affecting primarily ones communication and social interaction skills. Meaning they have difficulties communicating effectively or even at all. They struggle in social setting and don 't typically excel in social games or activities.
Autism is an intricate developmental disorder that is characteristically noticed by parents and or diagnosed by parents between the ages of eight-teen months and three years of age. In recent studies, Werner (2001) isolated themes from in-depth interviews conducted with different parents of children with autism. These themes included the following findings: the family’s life revolves around dealing with the child’s autism and unusual behaviors; parents feel losses because they and their children cannot lead a so called normal life; and the family experiences only fleeting moments of actually feeling like a typical family. Autism does not effect a particular type of person it occurs in all social, racial, and ethnic groups.
