Audrey Hepburn once said, “The ‘Third World’ is a term I don’t like very much, because we’re all one world. I want people to know that the largest part of humanity is suffering.” Throughout the years of her career, Audrey was not just seen as a beauty icon or an actress, but instead as a humanitarian. Born on May 4, 1929 in Belgium, Audrey was raised by her parents to be a self-successful woman. Growing up, she quickly became an elegant fashion icon. Starting off with minor roles in stage performances, and being a chorus girl for a handful of musicals, Audrey didn’t make her first big debut into the limelight until 1953. With the Life and Dignity of the Human Person, Audrey saw many examples of the indignity of whole communities. She even saw unfairness of the way families were treated by the government, just because of their religion, race or gender. Following the “we believe that people are better than things”, Audrey showed this skill greatly. She lived a lavish lifestyle full of fame and fortune anyone would want. But, once she got involved with UNICEF, she left that all behind to follow her passion for helping others. Audrey followed the Call to Family, Community, and the Common Good greatly, too. In her missions, she developed healthy relationships with the people she met. Creating a relationship and building up the society of a community is what the social teaching pushes us to do, and Audrey just being in the developing countries, and telling her story on what’s happening throughout the area brought the struggling community support from many other groups. Being an Ambassador for UNICEF has many rights and responsibility, one of these responsibilities is making sure that everyone has the right to shelter, food and the basic rights of life. All the countries Audrey visited on her trips lacked this basic necessity. Since the groups didn’t have access to the fundamental life, the community wasn’t able to grow together. When Audrey took part in delivering food bags to Sudan, or assisting in the creation of immunization programs in Turkey, she helped to give the people of these countries the rights and responsibilities they deserve. The Catholic Teaching “Option for the Poor and Vulnerable” was one of the biggest teachings Audrey followed in. With every mission she went, she saw vulnerable families everywhere. With the moral test seeing how the poor and vulnerable were treated, Audrey did everything she could to assist with making the communities and
