Atticus Finch As A Christ Figure

In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, one character in particular possessed a very Christ-like attitude. He was know by the name, Atticus Finch. During To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus and his two children went through many hard times of Racial difficulty. Many people admired Atticus for his courage and praised him for the great man he was; however, Atticus remained humble. In addition, Atticus treated all people equally, whether black or white and even mixed. Most importantly he put others before himself, sometimes placing himself in life and death situations. Atticus Finch exhibited Christ-like character through his humbleness, his want to treat all people equal, and his sacrifice to put others before himself.

During the life of Atticus Finch, racism proved itself to be an enormous problem. Many blacks and mixed people were seen as unworthy, different, and even lesser human beings. Although, Atticus was in the minority, he believed all people should be treated equally. One very important scene in the book involved a court case between a girl and a black man. Atticus Finch, believing all people should be treated with the same respect, was asked to defend the black man. Considering all the man’s background, work ethics, and personality, he discovered that the black man was no guiltier than the girl. Although in the end the black man was voted guilty, Atticus stood and fought for what was right. He placed others before himself no matter the circumstances. While defending the case of the black man, Tom Robinson, Atticus met with some men who were against equality. The group of men brought guns and readied themselves to shoot if they felt the need to. This put Atticus in a very dangerous, uncertain situation, but this did not keep him from defending what was right. He sat under the dim light defending his case and trying to persuade the hefty men. Even the thought of death did not stop him. In the Bible one Christ’s desire to place others before himself. He made the ultimate sacrifice for others by dying on the cross. Although Atticus did not die for Tom Robinson, he certainly placed his life in great danger and possessed one of Christ’s ultimate attributes,
