An Experiment: Death and Acting Sitting in the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, a thought came to me while I was sitting in a black chair in studio three. Alice Saltzman, our teacher, had been going through the inner justification of ourselves while we sat in a black chair imagining our past, present, and future. This was interesting but I couldn’t wrap my brain around one concept. How will I, as an actor, ever understand how to get to the emotional state that death requires? When you die, you do not know what comes next because you are dead. This poses a challenge as no actor can die and come back to tell of the experience they had. As said in the Art of Acting by Stella Adler herself, “Life beats you down and crushes the soul and art remind you that you have one”. I know that in acting there is not one correct method of reaching the truth. There are numerous different methods in which to get to the state of mind a character needs to be in. This experiment helped me learn that, throughout a variety of acting styles, the choices the majority of actors made were similar. In my experiment, sixteen people chose to sit in a chair and imagine their own interpretation of death while four chose to watch the video of someone dying. When it came to how the character should be played dying, fifteen chose to fight, acting wise, until they finally died while five chose to accept death as it is. It was surprising that ¼ of the surveyed people chose to accept death and twenty percent of the applicants chose to watch the film of someone dying. The truth is not black and white but instead full of color. The truth will never be visible but can be found in the art we create as actors. Different acting choices from different studios should all be blended together as they come from one method originally. Acting has multiple disciplines and actors can pick and choose what they believe works best for achieving the truth they desire from both the character played and the reaction of the audience.
