Art Analysis: Elizabeth Condon's 'White Lines'

Description From the first look of Elizabeth Condon’s “White Lines” painting, what struck me the most were the different colors and how much they complimented each other. The composition of the piece shows the distinctive qualities of it altogether, creating a sense of unity. The demanding blacks swirled within the work, the variations of purple, lilac and lavenders shown, the center which to me looks like a moon in itself shows plenty of value. The “moon” itself is shown as a pass way to an open horizon during the night. The darks give the piece a sense of mystery. Paint is splattered on the piece in areas. Color is her main source of expression, along with her irregular shapes. Her paintings don’t only reflect on how an area looks but how it feels. The different type of saturations she uses creates so much value throughout all her pieces. Her use of acrylic on linen to keep the paint wet for a longer period of time so she can pour out the paint and to manipulate and build the space is very noted in this piece. The visual texture conveyed is dominant as well. The colors are what drew me in by sight, as well as the size of the piece. The piece was so abstract and complex but yet had a sense of unity. The variety throughout all the shapes and colors gives her pieces a feel of energy and the different brushstrokes she uses to convey her work. It reminds me of the night and the life which haunts the night which I enjoy. Asymmetrical balance is shown in most of her paintings since she’s a gestural painter. If I could describe her style I would say it’s a mixture between contemporary and abstract art. Her art shows aspects from both art movements. I sense a mix of hyperrealism with abstraction when I see her
