Arizona Bill 1070: All States Should Enact Similar Laws

In 2010, the Arizona Senate introduced a bill that would become one of the strictest and anti-illegal immigration bills ever to be debated, and eventually implemented in the United States. The bill, usually referred to as Arizona Bill 1070, requires all aliens to carry their registration documents at all times. 1070 makes it a state misdemeanor for an alien to be in Arizona without carrying the required documents and bars state or local officials or agencies from restricting enforcement of federal immigration laws. It also cracks down on those sheltering, hiring and transporting illegal aliens. The United States government should implement this bill at the federal level.

The proposal of the law was brought to light after a large increase of drug and human smuggling and violence in both Arizona and Mexico. There has also been an increase in extreme violence on the Mexican side of the border with drug traffickers taking over smaller cities. Illegals are now, more than ever, trying to escape the violence. Coupled with the recession, and lack of immigration reform, State Senator Russell Pearce sponsored the bill that would pave the way and allow the state to deal with a widely spread illegal immigrant problem, as well as the smuggling and violence issues. The goal of the bill would give authorities the right to ask a person of interest, who already is being detained or questioned due to suspicious activity, about their current immigration status. This will help officially determine who is illegal currently, or out of status and allow officials to turn those not permitted to be in the country over to federal authorities so they may start proceedings to remove them from the country.
