Alcohol is a drink that is a common social norm in our society today. Alcohol is rising concern for not only adults, teenagers too. This is not a new situation and the concern has existed for years. Teenage drinking has become one of the largest social issues among young people in America today. There is simply no way of preventing underage drinking although it is illegal, there are ways to inform teenagers the effects and harm it does to your body. You simply can not tell college kids they can’t drink, it is unenviable, but again teaching the consequences and concerns can further their education with alcohol related substance and situations in which they encounter. Alcohol poisoning often leads to detox, which is a large issue today. The purpose of alcohol detoxification is to eliminate the body completely of the substance. Mankato is lucky enough to have a detox center close by, in New Ulm Minnesota. Teenagers are constantly being sent there for detox after there nights out. When one has alcohol poisoning, they will be sent to the detoxification center for at least 48 hours, and held longer if need be. The first symptoms of alcohol poisoning are change in mental state, vomiting, pale or blue skin, passing out and decreased body temperature. Alcohol is a depressant, therefore if you drink at a faster rater then your liver can process your breathing, heart rate and gag reflex will begin to slow down, because these are controlled by your nervous system. Typically, if these symptoms occur the user has alcohol poisoning and has overdoes, leading to an emergency room visit. The doctors will then send you to detox where you will receive fluids, IV’s, medications and supplemental oxygen provided though a mask or tub, inserted though the nose. Prompt treatment of alcohol overdose can prevent life-threatening health problems. However, severe alcohol overdose may cause seizures, resulting in brain damage if oxygen to the brain is cut off. This damage can be permanent. More and more college kids and teenagers are being sent to the detox centers every weekend, as the numbers get higher the concern for higher injuries increase.
