As technology becomes prevalent in this day and age, “screen time” begins at youth. Babies are given iPad’s to quell their crying, kids are given phones and tablets to occupy their time, teenagers spend hours in front of television sets and adults are glued to their phones. All information, news, life lessons, morals, are being delivered through these devices and we, as a society, are becoming socialized by the mass media. Beliefs last only as long as they are popular and are abandoned as quickly as they are adopted. I believe that excessive “screen time”, two hours or more, is a detriment to youngsters and negatively impacts them. The Federal Communications Commission, which regulates television has no regulations on violent programming. As youngsters spend hours in front of their screens, with 71% of 8 - 18 year olds having a TV in their bedrooms, the violence, sex, and profanity shown becomes normalized. Also the hours spent in front of the tv take away from other activities vital to a growing child’s health and development. Whereas teens should be out playing sports, engaged in various physical activity, or otherwise occupied, they waste away in front of televisions leading to future health issues such as diabetes. I personally believe that any “screen time” exceeding two hours for youngsters is harmful. Nowadays because the only interaction people have with social issues is a newscaster or biased programming, their views and understanding of world issues and conflicts are seriously skewed. This leads to a misinformed public and then further incites ignorance towards other beliefs, people, and situations. Also since certain aspects of life, such as violence, are normalized through gaming consoles and tv shows, people are more attuned to resort to violence to resolve their conflicts.
