The article that Jennifer Robinson wrote states, “About 22 million Americans visit chiropractors annually. Of these, 7.7 million, or 35%, are seeking relief from back pain from various causes, including accidents, sports injuries, and muscle strains. Other complaints include pain in the neck, arms, and legs, and headaches.” Chiropractic doctors are necessary for these people in pain. The field of chiropractics, a fascinating career, is based upon certain philosophies, has a wide scope of practice with a variety of treatments, requires a certain educational process and ethical considerations, and has had a long history with some controversies. The field of chiropractics was founded by D.D Palmer in the 1890s, and with the help of his son, Palmer expanded it in the early twentieth century. According to “Chiropractic,” “Chiropractic is a form of …show more content…
D.D Palmer believed that vertebral subluxation caused pinched nerves. D.D. Palmer gave the a metaphysical and philosophical meaning. D.D. Palmer’s son, B.J. Palmer expanded this concept later (“Chiropractic”).
“Chiropractic” clarified that Chiropractors manage the neuromusculoskeletal system without medicines or surgery. Some chiropractors specialize in back and neck pain while others focus on many different musculoskeletal issues. Chiropractic combines mainstream and alternative medicine. Massage therapy, osteopathy, physical therapy, and sports medicine all use some type of chiropractic care. Chiropractors are able to refer their patient to the appropriate specialist, but chiropractors are not licensed to write prescriptions or perform a surgery
drugs or surgery” (Chapman-Smith, 57) and the practice of chiropractic is the relationship between structure, function, and preservation/restoration of health (Chapman-Smith, 57). Dr. Ronald Gitelman is well-known for his contributions to the chiropractic profession. Dr. Gitelman was born in the 1930’s in Trenton, Ontario. While growing up, he partici...
“The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease” by Thomas A. Edison. Chiropractors use hands-on spinal manipulation and other alternative treatments on the spine which will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication. Chiropractic care began in 1895 when its founder, Daniel David Palmer, claimed any and all diseases could be healed by nothing more than just his hands. Dr. Palmer examined a janitor who was deaf for 17 years after the janitor felt his back was out of place, so Dr. Palmer gave an adjustment to what was felt to be a misplaced vertebra in the upper back. The janitor then observed that his hearing improved thanks to Dr. Palmer. Chiropractors use manipulation to restore mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury caused by sitting without proper back support. Chiropractic is primarily used as a pain relief alternative for muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissue, such as cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. About 22 million Americans visit chiropractors annually
The word “chiropractor” has two word origins, the Greek words cheir and praxis; meanwhile, cheir means “hand” and praxis means “practice.” Also, most of the work that chiropractors do is done by hand (Pike para. 5). In 2002, going to a chiropractor was found to be the most commonly used program for therapy. Seventy-four percent, about 4 million, of people that had back pain went to a chiropractor to get treated. Among that 74 percent of people, 66 percent of them stated that they got “a great benefit” (Pike para. 9). Many chiropractors work full time but 1 out of 3 chiropractors work part time. Chiropractors work whenever their patients need them, even on w...
Ever since I was a little kid, I had always loved going to my father’s office and getting an adjustment. No matter if it hurt or not. On job shadow days, I would go to his office and always ask him what he was doing when he adjust his patients, but what he said was “You are to young to understand.” As I grew up, my father has told me about what he really does and my interest in being a chiropractor has grown dramatically.
Physical therapy has been around for quite a long time and has improve within the last 100 years. It became more prevalent during WWII and didn’t become a professional doctoral degree until the 1970s. Physical therapist heal the body as a whole, while chiropractors focus on the spine and spinal cord. To help improve mobility, physical therapists use massage therapy, STIM (tens unit), and exercises. To prevent injuries, physical therapists work on balance and mobility issues but using therabands, and walking over steps, in a straight line, and walking from side to side. Also, they can help avoid surgery by strengthening muscles and reducing inflammation and pain. Chiropractors are good for neck and back pain and help relieve stress in the spine which is good for back injuries. Although chiropractors use special techniques to relieve back pain, physical therapists exercise the whole body and ensure
Chiropractors are professionals who correct health problems by performing spinal adjustments. Many people who are looking for an alternative to drugs and surgery opt to see a chiropractor. Chiropractors take a holistic approach. They believe that they can help the body heal itself by performing spinal adjustments.
I have always aspired to be a chiropractor. Chiropractors treat patients with health problems of the neuromusculoskeletal system including the nerves, bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. They use spinal adjustments as well as manipulation, usually on the neck back (“Summary”). I chose to go down the path of chiropractic practice because I have always been interested in it. It is important to understand the education and training requirements, skills and talents needed, salary and benefits offered, and the duties while making your career choice a chiropractor.
Chronic lower back pain is a major health disorder in the world today (Mendelson, Selwood, Kranz, Loh, Kidson, Scott, 1983). It can cause many physical, mental, and emotional problems on the victim (Mendelson, Selwood, Kranz, Loh, Kidson, Scott, 1983). Many people find their work so unbearably painful that they often have to stay home. Others experience depression, inactivity, and social isolation (Kaplan, Sallis, Patterson). Treatments range from the conventional methods such as medication and surgery to the alternative or unconventional methods such as acupuncture. However, only a small percentage of low back pain patients have the type of condition for which surgery can be used so acupuncture is becoming more popular (Lehmann, Russell, Spratt, 1983).
There is suggested evidence that a number of anatomical structures such as, bones, intervertebral discs, muscles, ligaments, joints and neural structures cause back pain (Hoy, Brooks, Blyth & Buchbinder, 2010). Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is a condition that is believed to cause chronic back pain (Weiner & Nordin, 2010). It occurs when there is an extrusion of disc material into the surrounding tissue (Weiner & Nordin, 2010). It is also suggested that abnormal stress of the ligaments, muscles and mechanoreceptors contribute to back pain (Weiner & Nordin, 2010). The main cause of chronic back pain has not been identified, but there are many suggested issues that are believed to contribute to chronic back pain.
(A type of “mechano-therapy” emerged of a combination with other therapist preformed by a physician or a nurse’s assistant.) Over time, these practices were absorbed into what would be general medicine. In the 1920s Masseurs and Masseuses had lost most of their market to doctors. They mainly found work with wealthy individuals who wanted a general, relaxing form of massage. After World War ll, a group of massage operators formed the American Association of Masseurs and Masseuses.
Physical therapy is always full of surprises, from new advancements in technology to new and improved therapeutic techniques. Although there are fun games and new technology that physical therapists can do with patients, the main struggle for physical therapists is to motivate their patients to complete their therapy exercises both in the clinic and in the outside world. This problem is very frustrating because the doctors who work at the clinic constantly push patients to complete their therapy so that they can heal; however, when patients are stubborn and reluctant to their treatment, yet constantly complain of pain, doctors must spend more time convincing them to do the therapy rather than completing the therapy itself.

By the sixteenth century, medical practitioners began to incorporate massage into their healing treatments. Massage has been a major part of medicine for at least five thousand years and important in Western medical traditions for at least three thousands years. In the early part of the nineteenth century, Per Henrik Ling, a physiologist and fencing master, from Smaaland, Sweden, developed and systemized movements that he found to be beneficial in improving physical conditions. His system of movements, based on the science of physiology, became known as Medical Gymnastics. In 1813, Ling established the Royal Swedish Central Institute of Gymnastics, which was financed by the Swedish government.
According to Massage Today “Massage therapy is recognized as one of the oldest methods of healing, with references in medical texts nearly 4,000 years old”. I feel that the benefit of rubbing aching muscles and hurt limbs comes to us as naturally as breathing air. Among its many purposes and advantages, massage soothes achy muscles, helps heal injuries, strengthens baby’s muscles and relieves stress. To me, massage is not only a way to soothe the muscles and relieve the everyday stresses of society, massage is a way to connect with others through the common practice of touch. We have needed touch in our lives since the first seconds after our birth, so it’s not surprising that we would seek out touch in the form of massage.
The world of cosmetic surgery is one of the largest and fastest growing industries worldwide, bringing in billions of dollars each year with cosmetic procedures that both men and women are having, in order to improve their looks, self esteem, and fulfilling societies norms and values. Cosmetic surgery has been accepted in certain cultures, this is a way of expressing who the person is. In my opinion cosmetic surgery is a good thing for individuals to pursue. As cosmetic surgery improves mental and physical well being, cosmetic surgeries through media, as cometic surgeries are improving health related issues, and creating opportunities for people.
