Are Speech Codes a form of Censorship?

Free speech, a controversy that comes up all over America in all sorts of different settings such as careers, school campuses, even within our very own homes. Free speech has always been something that has had a very loose definition, when does someone speaking out stop being free speech? Is it when it hurts someone else? When it becomes a threat to someone’s safety? When it becomes a threat to the government? How can free speech be defined and when should the boundaries be drawn and when does it become censorship? Free speech and censorship on college campuses is an issue that has been around for a long time. While some college campuses may claim to adhere to free speech getting them to follow through with this is another matter entirely. The videos on the fire website brought up several examples of campuses where free speech isn’t completely enforced, incidents where an email or a Facebook post leads to trouble with the campus rules run rampant. All the while ignoring the fact that they are infringing upon our very rights. Free speech on a college campus is an important part of the college experience that I believe should be further encouraged in order to truly give college students the real life experience.
The videos on The Fire website brought up many issues that should be addressed, such as the fact that some campuses feel the need for a free speech zone, why should they need a free speech area when free speech should be available anywhere on the campus? By letting universities get away with this censorship we are allowing them to throw those rights, which many fought and lost their lives for us to gain, away. When we allow this censoring to occur in our education systems we allow those teachings to spread saying...

...In conclusion free speech is one of if not the most important part of campus life and these regulations are infringing on that censoring the people and hampering their development. Freedom of speech is something that all parties should be able to enjoy liberally and yet, it’s being pushed further into the wayside each year. Speech codes are just another way for the system to press its control onto another through the blocking of basic human rights. Free speech is such an important part of college life simply because of the freedom that knowing you can say what you wish and not risk any repercussions grants you a clear mind and allows you to focus on improving not just your own future but the future of your country as well. Censorship in higher education is a fruitless goal that only hinders people while some regulations should be placed, this is not one of them.
