The play Antigone by Sophocles is about reason and opinion and reveals how people use their voice to be heard. Antigone uses reasoning and opinions to express their moral beliefs and state laws in the play. People manipulate each other by using these terms to get their way by speaking out and standing up for themselves.
Creon is not strong enough to stand in my way.”(191) This quote from Antigone in the prologue is illustrating how even Creon, the king of Thebes, will not stop her from contravening the crime to bury her beloved brother. The dialogue in the prologue between Ismene and Antigone assembles the entire rest of the play. Ismene tries to stop her sister from defying such a law, but is not successful. State laws can and will be broken if it means respecting and following moral laws.
In Scene I of Antigone, Sentry is almost accused of breaking King Creon’s law to not bury Polyneices. “How dreadful it is when the right judge judges wrong.”(203) This quote from Sentry is saying that even though Creon is the right judge, he is judging wrong by not taking into consideration who could have actually committed the crime. Antigone committed a holy crime meaning that even though she went against her state laws, she respected her moral laws and gave her brother the burial he deserved. Antigone took pride in her actions of a generous act and died without shame. Strong relationships whether it’s family, friend, boyfriend or girlfriend all make sacrifices at some point in their lives to better others.
