“When someone burns the flag in protest they are exercising their right to free speech, and that is a freedom that should never be tarnished by the government”, says an anonymous writer. Criticism of the law has been a common theme throughout history. It is designed to inspire the audience to modify and benefit their society. In Antigone, by Sophocles, a woman challenges King Creon’s prohibition towards burying Polyneices and defies the standards of being a female. The poem, the “Ballad of Birmingham”, also tells a story about a girl who stands up for her people and their rights, even after being told it would be dangerous to do so. It was obvious the girl loved her mother, but it was also quite clear that she wanted justice to be served. To go behind your own mother’s back is difficult for everyone, but she knew it was the right thing to do and it would not only benefit the people, but also her mother. The child was not just thinking about herself when she took off. Another reason people might defy the laws would be for family. The play Antigone, shows us the importance of valuing family many times and how it affect how we act. Ismene does not compensate for her brother’s death enough and Antigone declares to her: “‘And now you can prove what you are: A true sister, or a traitor to your family.’” (Prologue, 26-27). Antigone does not bear any sympathy for Ismene. Although Ismene is just hearing about the plan, Antigone refuses to understand her point of view and go easy on her. Because she learns the information that Antigone gives her in a short amount of time, she might not be able to think as clearly as she would like to. Instead of understanding how Ismene feels, Antigone outbreaks at her with anger for not supporting her on the spot. All of the pain and suffering that the mother feels could have been prevented if the child and mother worked together to find an alternative to fix the situation. Although these things happens, not challenging the rules at all can be both beneficial and harmful. In Antigone, if Antigone weren’t to have buried her brother she wouldn’t have lost her life. However, Creon would never learn to be wise and understand why his actions were wrong. Everything he did resulted on a bad note and without Antigone going against Creon’s orders, there would have still been an ignorant ruler of Thebes.
