Animal Experimentation, Who Has the Last Say? The beauty industry is a very successful business. With hundreds of thousands of products including lipsticks, foundations or simple face creams, it is very likely that the majority of these products have undergone some type of animal testing. Every product is also marked whether it has been animal tested or whether it is cruelty-free. So, with that being said, what is animal testing you may ask? Animal testing, also known as animal experimentation, is the use of animals to classify whether the products are safe for humans to use. For starters, animal testing is a very harsh process that animals undergo and therefore people are searching for alternative methods to avoid harming animals. The sole purpose of some animals’ lives is to be used in labs for experimentation and many people see this as unfair treatment. That is why Researcher Gregory Mone discusses possible alternatives in his research journal by stating “[a] combination of laboratory and computer modeling would then be used to evaluate whether a new chemical would spark reactions that match those critical, harm-inducing events.” (Mone). This proves that there are potential alternatives that could be used to replace the animals in labs all together. This would allow the animals to live normal lives. In addition, makeup companies are making an effort to have a variety of cruelty-free items. As stated in Sydney Herald’s article, “[w]hen new customers discover LUSH and hear that our products are not tested on animals, they are horrified to learn that some cosmetics companies are still killing and harming animals.” (Herald). People are becoming more welcoming of the idea of purchasing cruelty-free products in their household. There are benefits to animal testing aside from consequences. But, do the consequences outweigh the benefits? In the sources, the authors, for the most part, state that people benefit greatly from animal testing.
