Evelyn Velasquez Humanities Prof. Faltas 24 May 2018 Women in the Ancient world Society often views women as a household wife although this mentality is evolving it is far from what women in the ancient society are viewed as. In the ancient world women are often assumed to not be of importance, when in fact they were just as important as men or maybe even more important in their daily roles as women. Women in ancient Egypt had important roles as warriors, and even became powerful queens to one the biggest empires in the ancient world. In the Article “Warrior Women to Female Pharaohs: Careers for Women in Ancient Egypt” by Dr. Joann Fletcher, mainly focuses on the form of equality of women who lived in ancient Egypt which is a relatively modern mentality to society now. In Dr. Fletchers words “Royal women undertake military campaigns whilst others are decorated for their active role in conflict. Women were regarded as sufficiently threatening to be listed as 'enemies of the state', and female graves containing weapons are found throughout the three millennia of Egyptian history, “(Sexual equality, 2014). Queen Hatshepsut is a great example of women who were very powerful for their time being as she was the longest reigning female pharaoh and the had the most significant impact on ancient Egypt. Ruling over 21 years she managed to bring wealth to the kingdom but also “She dressed up in men’s clothing and wore a false beard. She also insisted that people address her as “King” and “His Majesty”. She is known for her peaceful reign and for the building of many monuments, including the mortuary complex at Deir el-Bahri, “(The queens of Egypt, 2018). A Pharaoh in Ancient Egypt also led the military because of this many pharaohs wives took on the duty of leading armies and co-ruled the kingdom.
