In the beginning, Mila is very distraught.This is because she has been picked off of an island and has been brought to the mainland. Meanwhile,This story is being told from the perspective of Mila. The story is being also being told in first person. I know this because she specks as in “I”, for example, “I look in the mirror.” she says. Also, the reason the font is big because the author is trying to make it feel like we are Mila. Dr. Beck is working on identifying words and speech. She is also getting Mila to say the words that she is teaching her.

The narration mimics human speech through breaking grammar rules and using informal language. This is exemplified through the passage where Granny is in the hospital and the narrator comments on the medical system saying, “Those doctors tell Granny, ummmm, ummmm, ummmm. Maybe you better stay here. One day. Four days. Maybe we see something” (King, Magpies 23). The narrator pokes fun at a system which frustrates him and a somewhat sarcastic and witty voice is created in the passage. Carefully revealing pieces of Miss Brill's character through this point of view illustrated her own passage into a new reality. Keeping the point of view limited to Miss Brill and excluding the thoughts of the other characters kept the reader centered on Miss Brill so that the same realizations could come about simultaneously. The reader, through masterful use of point of view, was able to share a very meaningful experience with the character and go through the same steps that she did to reach the end.
