Jim Valvano was the head coach for the North Carolina State Wolfpack in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In 1992, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and as a result he created the V Foundation, whose raises money for cancer research. In 1993, Valvano won the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the ESPY’s. In his acceptance speech, Valvano effectively incorporates the three appeals of speech writing, but uses a strong ethos appeal to capture the audience. Through such a strong ethos appeal, Valvano makes himself worthy for the award he is receiving, which is the goal for any acceptance speech. Valvano’s speech is also effective because he uses four of the six parts of a speech, found in the Ad Herenium. In Valvano’s speech, exordium, narration, proof, and peroration are present. Since the purpose of this speech is not to get the hearers to donate, division (showing the difference between you and your opponent) and refutation (lowering your opponent’s arguments) are not needed. So let us go through Valvano’s speech to see the different parts where he makes his ethos appeal.
Exordium is the part of a speech where the speaker uses ethos to relate to his audience. In this part, the speaker explains why he or she was chosen to present the topic. This part is usually used in the introduction to catch the hearer’s attention and establish a connection with them. To do this, Valvano uses his cancer as an ethos appeal. Right at the beginning of the speech, he talks about his parents and how they raised him to be “a very emotional and passionate man”. As he says, “That’s being the son of Rocco and Angelina Valvano. Sadly, Jim Valvano died two months after he accepted the award. But this speech is still ingrained in our minds. Through the ethos appeal in this speech, Valvano showed the audience why he deserved the Arthur Ashe award and convinced them to donate to his cancer research foundation. Throughout the different parts of the acceptance speech, Valvano shows his courage and love that helped him to win the award in the first place.

...etorical analysis teaches that the practice of rhetoric in pathos is not always strong enough to stand alone or solely support an argument. Many times pathos is contingent on emotions that are not supported by anything but the speaker alone. Therefore, like President Johnson’s speech, it is important to stick to a genre since it offers enough structure to validate the pathos illustrated. The deliberative genre provides a speech that evokes a serious setting where the speaker can be taken seriously and with a sense of urgency. The combination of pathos and genre can be a model for a successful pair of rhetorical features explained through my rhetorical analysis of Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1963 acceptance speech. In this speech he was able to address the devastating loss and mourning of JFK, while all the same maintaining an outlook of perseverance of the American people.
Jim Valvano, otherwise known as “Jimmy V”, was a college basketball player, coach, and broadcaster. This paper will cover Jimmy and define his true leadership qualities. Jimmy was an icon in the sports world not only for his coaching ability. He taught the world that leaders need a vision, leaders need to connect with their followers, and that leaders learn from their followers. In Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, pathos, logos and ethos are evidently and effectively used to persuade the audience into believing Caesar was not ambitious and that he was an innocent man. Throughout the speech the citizens were easily persuaded, but Anthony’s intellectual speeches made the audience question and imagine what they have turned into. Anthony used these three rhetorical appeals to win back the citizens just like many people do today. The power of pathos, logos and ethos in a speech can change one mind in an instant and if successfully used can change a mind to be fully persuaded without confusion.

By appealing so much to pathos, his letter focuses more on emotionally convincing and persuading the reader to accept his claim, rather than providing facts and logic to his argument. His combined use of logos and ethos also adds an aspect of logic and reason to his argument, as well as further showing his credibility and connection to the subject as the author. This award has been an outlet for male athletes to “break down the locker room walls and cry a little, or love a little, or show a sensitive side” (Collins, para. 14). Valvano learned his bone cancer was terminal and in response announced that ESPN was creating the V Foundation to help fund cancer research. The emotional speech he gave during the 1993 ESPYs was legendary and was the ground work for the V Foundation to come (Hill, para. 2). The V foundation is a foundation dedicated to cancer research whose end goal is to find a cure. It’s motto? Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up. The formation of the V Foundation arose out of the first ESPY speech by Valvano, and, while some consider the ESPYs an excuse to dress up and receive an award, it is much more than that. It [ESPYs] is one of the biggest TV fundraisers for the V foundation where “you have athletes waging one of the most important contests of all: the fight against cancer” (Finder, para. 9). Years later, his speech is still played every summer and continues to motivate those battling cancer. Jimmy’s brother, Bob Valvano, once said “we were afraid the memory would fade into the background and the foundation would lose stream. But it has been the opposite. The ESPYs have grown each year” which shows the lasting legacy Jimmy V has left behind (Finder, para. 19). In 2004 ESPN called for “Show Your Spirit Day” in which the fans wear their favorite team shirts and donate at least $5 to the V Foundation. This was done to honor Valvano and celebrate his life in a positive way, by giving back to the cancer research community (Hill, para. 3). George Bodenheimer, President of ESPN, Inc., was a huge advocate of the V Foundation and even raised the expectations of ESPNs efforts supporting the V Foundation for Cancer Research which was founded by ESPN in

In former Civil Rights Activist, Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech “Beyond Vietnam-- A Time to Break Silence”, he asserts that the war in Vietnam is utterly immoral and has a far negative implication, not only for Vietnam but for the United States as well. In this speech, King uses three main rhetorical devices, in order to strengthen his position on this war. The three main rhetorical devices: ethos, pathos, and logos, are universally considered as the three necessary tools of persuasion in literature.
In June of 2011, Conan O’Brien gave the commencement address to the 2011 graduating class of Dartmouth College. O’Brien uses humor and anecdotes to deliver a powerful speech which resonated with most viewers. O’Brien also used many literary devices for the graduates to better understand his primary points. Conan O’Brien delivery of his commencement address was effective because of his use of pathos, ethos, and antidotes, which contributed to his fantastic speech.
On August 29, 2015 Kanye West won the Video Vanguard Award during the 2015 MTV VMA. During his acceptance speech for this award he made a huge announcement. He stated that he would be running for president in 2020. While also making this speech Kanye West also admitted to smoking a joint before coming on stage. I would say that this is not a good way to start the star’s road to presidency. This article quoted Kanye West stating,”I don't know what I finna lose after this. It don't matter, though; It's not about me. It's about ideas. New ideas. People with ideas. People who believe in truth”. Maybe he will bring new things to the table that America and the world has never seen. People act like it is such a crazy idea to imagine Kanye West as president, but people forget that Actor Arnold Swartzenager was the governor of California and Actor Ronald Reagan was president.
