Throughout one’s life, he or she will encounter an opportunity that will likely impact his or her perspective on a given situation. In Waste Land, Vik Muniz embraced the opportunity to travel to Jardim Gramacho in Brazil in hopes of making a difference with the pickers by incorporating the pickers as assistants for the art projects. While at the landfill in Rio de Janeiro, he experiences the life of the pickers which helps him to create the art that will transform the lives of the workers; these experiences allow Muniz to develop as a person (Walker). Vik Muniz’s perspective regarding the landfill and the pickers evolved from expressing pity to embracing the pickers as a group of friends. Initially, Vik Muniz displayed an attitude of pity and shock towards the pickers and the landfill when he first encountered the video revealing the horrendous conditions in the landfill. He reveals the map of the landfill to his wife and describes it as “This is the end of their life. This is where everything not good goes” (Walker). The geographical location of the landfill is secluded from the world, so the pickers will not be the most experienced group of people in regards to cooperating with an outsider. Muniz improved as a person throughout his trip because he interacted with several different personalities and impacted their lives. The concept of changing the lives of the pickers was a daunting challenge, but Muniz successfully impacted the picker’s lives. As a result, Muniz’ ethos increases over the course of the video. By assisting the pickers, Muniz not only establishes himself as a renowned artist, but also someone who cares about the less fortunate and is willing to make a difference.
