Analyzing Trump's Call for Unity in 2018 State of Union Address

The 2018. State of the Union Address was President Trump's first address in office. He focused on some topics that were clear to his agenda such as the economy, infrastructure, and immigration. However, in his speech he also attempted to establish unity. Trump began his speech by talking about American heroes such as Ashlee Leppert who was one of the first helicopters to arrive in Houston during Hurricane Harvey. He also mentioned David Dahlberg a firefighter who fought deadly California wildfires and rescued several children trapped at a summer camp. The then called for unity between the parties stating "Tonight, I call upon on all of us to set aside our differences, to seek out common ground, and to summon the unity we need to deliver for …show more content…

He spoke in Fall River, Massachusetts which was a city built by immigrants. Kennedy begins his speech by acknowledging that Americans have "spent the last year anxious, angry, afraid". He talks about our soaring economy stating that "We see an economy that makes stocks soar, investor portfolios bulge and corporate profits climb but fails to give workers their fair share of the reward." He then states that the Trump administration is hurting environmental justice and civil rights are being violated. Kennedy follows up by stating that hatred and supremacy are on the rise and talking about gun violence in schools, concerts, and congregations. Kennedy's speech then changes to talk say "no matter your political beliefs, that this is not right, this is not who we are,". Kennedy takes another jab at the administration by saying that "they are targeting the very idea that we are all worthy of protection". Proceeding this Kennedy talks about Trumps tweets indirectly by saying "For them, dignity isn't something you are born with, but something you measure by your net worth, your celebrity, your headlines, your crowd size." Kennedy also regards to Trump's tax reform by saying "We can cut taxes for corporations today if we raise them on families tomorrow." Kennedy gave a very positive view of immigrants and I personally agree with that. I feel as though it is unfair to be strict with immigration in a where the only people in the U.S that did not immigrate here are the Native Americans, additionally immigrants help our economy and overall they are people who deserve a shot at the American dream. Kennedy also talks about the soaring economy and in his speech and how the funds in this country are not being distributed fairly. Stating that "CEO's making 300 times their average worker is not right" Although the findings have been closer to 200 that is still incredibly unjust and getting money into the pockets of everyday Americans as it has been shown that the best way to stimulate the economy as we tend to circulate money more than those who are wealthy. This also relates to when Kennedy speaks about the tax plan because it will be increasing taxes on the middle and lower classes in turn circulating less
