This mother, Betsy Barlow of Salt Lake City also inspired her daughter, Ellen to do the same thing. It is explained that Mrs. Barlow felt that being a part of a polygamous marriage was defeating for women and herself. O’Brien states, “Barlow believes that in practice, polygamy ``suppresses ' ' women”. According to the text book the definition of polygamy is “a family system in which one person has more than one spouse, usually one man to multiple women”. In class we talked about how this is illegal and Mrs. Barlow from the article also comment on how she had to hide this part of her life and that doesn’t seem right. It also is weird to me to see someone confess that partook in such a religion, knowing it created ten to do illegal things. That’s probably because of the law that was passed saying people can divorce with no cause but it creates more divers families and that’s what Mrs. Barlow is, a mother and ex-wife of a polygamy marriage. There is nothing wrong with having more diversity in the world and Mrs. Barlow has also lead her daughter to follow in her footsteps. Now there might be one less divorce because Ellen Barlow might not have to divorce. Mrs. Barlow did a lot of things her family and church never thought she would do and that’s not always a bad thing.
