In the quiet country of Serenity everyone treats each other as they want to be treated and accept that bad things might happen but they have to power to be the one to change it, make it better, and to find that tranquility again. Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase just want to find somewhere that they can live their lives together and stop worrying about all the monsters, or the thought of dying everyday but they didn’t know that Gaea was also going to Serenity.
Percy is a natural leader, who is valiant, vibrant and will do anything for the people he loves and cares about. He is the son of poseidon who has a sense of human that is sardonic but also smart. Percy’s whole demeanor is laid-back. Even though he is perspicacious he can also be absent or feebleminded. Throughout history, many ancient cultures created stories involving great heroes and gods to explain certain aspects of their daily lives. These stories would form an important part of the culture’s religion and are referred to today as mythology. One great hero from ancient Greek mythology is Perseus. According to both ancient standards and today’s standards, Perseus would be seen as a great hero. The many actions that Perseus is said to have done in his adventures prove his heroism.
There are many other characters in the story the story, but there are a couple special one. Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena. So you can imagine she was one smart cookie. Percy’s father is Poseidon, god of the sea. Athena and Poseidon didn’t really get along. Annabeth and Percy have something in common: both have family issues and terrible step-parents. For starters, Percy is the son of Poseidon, which I think is pretty awesome. Being the son of Poseidon also means that he can practically breath underwater without requiring those nasty gills people see on fish. Besides being able to breath underwater, Percy is also pretty great at being the comical relief in those tense monster fighting situations. Percy and his friends are in many different settings in the stories, all having their similarities and differences. The one that stands out to me is the Labyrinth. Percy spends the most time in the Labyrinth than any other setting. Also, this one is completely the opposite of the other two settings. In the text it says “We made it a hundred feet before we were hopelessly lost.” (Riordan, 94). This states how they’ve only been walking for a little bit until they were lost. This represents how confusing the labyrinth is. Then, the setting is Camp Half Blood. This is the place where Percy trains for his upcoming battles or events. Humor and Graphics: Persepolis and American Born Chinese The role of humor and the use of graphics are similar in both a graphic memoir Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and a graphic novel American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang. Persepolis is a graphic memoir of a young girl named Marjane that grew up in Iran when the Islamic revolution was occurring. Satrapi throughout her graphic memoir novel is able to interpret her own personal struggles growing up in a world of tragedies and fitting in society. American Born Chinese is a graphic novel that contains three stories.
Hostility is far more detrimental to an individual’s self-worth than complete indifference. By nature, indifference is a passive act, while dislike can turn into physical or verbal abuse. Animosity is often deeply rooted in one’s mind, much harder to change and forgive than simple apathy. Marjane Satrapi, author of Persepolis, also illustrates that hatred is greatly more destructive to a society. Through Marji, Satrapi’s younger self, it is shown that dislike can compromise the compassion of normally good people. Satrapi also displays that intolerance can take hold of and shape the actions of an entire population. Iran during its political tension of the 1970s and 1980s is the perfect backdrop to explain the many ways that hatred manifests itself, and how it can have a severe lasting impact on all who are involved.
This is a companion book on how Percy can connect to different characters and settings, and what he feels throughout the book. It is also on getting a better understanding of the characters and how they feel throughout the book.
It is hard to imagine a world where heroes did not exist. Since ancient Greece, mythological heroes have inspired us to dream big and do great things. Two of the greatest heroes from Greek mythology are Theseus and Perseus. Throughout their lives, they are heroic. This includes their strange origin, or their stage in life where they are on a quest. Perseus was one of the first heroes in mythology, and proves to be the greatest.
While reading Percy’s story I was shocked because it was as if I were reading about my own experiences with reading and writing. As a child and teenager reading was an escape from the world and anxieties that surrounded me. Although, unlike Percy I read anything that I could get my hands on. I remember going to a book sale at the town library and buying books based on how old they looked because they didn’t have fancy picture covers. That was one of the earliest memories I have of falling in love with a story because of the simplicity of the authors words instead of the pop culture interest of the world. Just like Percy, I left class feeling like I have no idea what I am doing because I thought that all you could do was write genre based material.
In the movie Hercules, it was once said, “A true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart.” This was assuredly true about the Greek hero. According to Aristotle, part of their characterization was built upon personality, although the other part was built on strength. There were many characters that fit this description in Greek mythology, but of all of them Perseus was the most superb. This son of Zeus and Danae helped the Gods vanquish evil, most remarkable defeating Medusa. He had many other amazing feats throughout his life that helped make him outstanding, but those feats were not the only thing that made him who he was. His valiant qualities, tied in with his brave personality, and heroic acts all prove together that Perseus was the most astounding Greek hero.
Even in our present time we can see how culture principles and characteristic drive can cause conflict. Within a society, an individual does not exist. If an individual does exist, then they are no longer a part of the society causing rebellion. The film Persepolis is an adaption to Marjane Satrapi’s The Complete Persepolis coming-of-age graphic memoir. It involves a young Muslim girl name Marjane as she comes of age within the environment of the Iranian Revolution. The film explores the actualization of Marjane through allegory to show how she must construct her identity within a foundation of westernization, religion, and gender.
