During the Romantic period, women are illustrated as powerless citizens, in the novel entitled Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley. This is displayed where the women posses pure, submissive,gracious,nurturing and selfless qualities. Despite portraying the women as powerless beings, the author does challenge this notion. In this tale, Victor Frankenstein, a scientist, successfully created a living being. Therefore, he eliminated a woman’s biological role to provide life. Additionally, the main narrators in this novel are male dominant and the women are portraits of the male 's perception of them. The first tragic event occurs with Justine Moritz. She is a woman that is much respected and loved by the Frankenstein family. However, the death of William Frankenstein ended her life. Moritz is accused of murdering William Frankenstein. During the court trial, she confesses that she committed the murder. Although, she did not commit such crime because the monster admits his responsibility of this murder. Therefore, Justine was submissive to the authority figure and did not take control of her life. However, Elizabeth Lavenza did believe in Moritz’ innocence, but she did not have the power to prevent her execution. This unassertive personality led to dire consequences; her death. During his abandonment, he wanders in the forest and learns social aspects from the DeLacey family. His request to Frankenstein is inspired by the relationship between Felix and Safie. When he saw them together, the monster said that it, “...expressed joy”(Shelley 83). Therefore, the monster learns that humans, essentially males, need women to eliminate such depressed feelings. The author chose these names wisely because the name “Felix” in Latin translates to happiness and the name “Safie” in Arabic means someone who is pure. Therefore, these characters have chemistry because when the monster encounters Felix for the first time, he was sorrowful. However, after he meets Safie, he changes and becomes a happy man. In scientific terms, the word “pure” means something that is uncontaminated and clean. Therefore, the connection is made by showing that women, like Safie, are present to clear any troubles or ‘dirt’ from men. From this event,the monster visits Frankenstein to make a personal demand that, “ Frankenstein must create a female for the monster, with whom the monster can live in the interchange of those sympathies necessary for the monster being” (Shelley 104).
