“I have a dream” is one of the most famous speeches given throughout history. It is even defined by his author as “the greatest demonstration for freedom in history”. It is a political and historical narrative text which was delivered by Martin Luther King on the 28th of August of 1963 at the end of the “March on Washington for jobs” in the capital of the country, Washington D.C. Martin Luther King was not only a clergyman but also the leader of some African-American Civil Rights movements whose aims were to fight against discrimination, injustice and above all intolerance against black Americans citizens. In order to understand the significance of this speech, it is necessary to do a historical approach as there was a critical situation that black people were facing long before the time when the speech was made. “The March of Washington” was a multitudinous protest which was organized by different civil rights and religious organizations. Their objective was to put to an end the humiliating situation that black American citizens had to deal all over the country on a daily basis, such as segregation, especially in public transports –The Montgomery Bus Boycott was one the protests against segregation- and discrimination, primarily in boarding schools. It should be pointed out that the former president of The USA, Abraham Lincoln set the first stone a hundred years before King’s speech in “The Emancipation Proclamation”. Thanks to this document, Lincoln freed all slaves from ten states. Although this fact it is seen as a milestone in the fight against discrimination, no major changes occurred afterwards. One of the consequences of the reasons above mentioned, among others such as the Civil Right Movement at the beginning of the 19... ... middle of paper ... ...ould not see his dream fulfilled. He will always be remembered as a peaceful fighter who fought for a better world. He died as he lived, fighting against the injustices. Maybe he was not a dreamer but he had an important dream to fulfill. We cannot deny that the world is still full of injustices and discrimination, however, if we focus on the The USA, he has achieved his goal somehow ,and having the most powerful country of the world a black American president proves that he was not mistaken. Obama’s “Yes, we can” has many interpretations being the overthrow of George Bush’s government one of them, but I wholeheartedly believe that this famous sentence was the culmination of the last King’s sentence “…we are free at last!” because the triumph of a black candidate for the general elections is the culmination of his dream . That is his lasting influence, his legacy.
