Machiavelli’s Judgement of the People “Knowledge is power. Power to do evil...or power to do good. Power itself is not evil. So knowledge itself is not evil” (Veronica Roth). Machiavelli is providing all of his knowledge that is useful for aspiring or current rulers. The information is also helpful to understand how Machiavelli was truly thinking during his time in power. He has experienced many things that have persuaded him to think the way he does. He has a specific mindset when it comes to certain ideals. Machiavelli presents some views that are remarkably different from other individuals when considering human nature including the desires and justice, the decency of the people, and virtues of a prince.

Machiavelli uses virtue as meaning one has agility, strength, dexterity and discretion of a ruler. He explains that the ability to gain or keep power is a virtue, to show,” ...difficulty of his staying in power will be in proportion to his abilities or failings...can 't go from being an ordinary citizen to a ruler without either talent or favorable circumstances, we must suppose that one or the other of these factors will be offsetting...” (Machiavelli 22). Machiavelli believes that finding or creating your own power is extremely hard to do unless you have virtue. Throughout Chapter VI, examples of successful rulers are given, “Those like these men, who become princes by the paths of virtue, acquire their principality with difficulty but hold it with ease” (Machiavelli 23). Cyrus, Moses and Romulus, and Theseus were rulers who were provided a chance and they worked towards their long lasting success as rulers. They were not given an opportunity to take over power which shows how virtue, skills, strength, and intelligence can lead to immense accomplishments. Niccolò Machiavelli was a man who lived during the fourteen and fifteen hundreds in Florence, Italy, and spent part of his life imprisoned after the Medici princes returned to power. He believed that he should express his feelings on how a prince should be through writing and became the author of “The Qualities of a Prince.” In his essay, he discusses many points on how a prince should act based on military matters, reputation, giving back to the people, punishment, and keeping promises. When writing his essay, he follows his points with examples to back up his beliefs. He strongly promoted a secular society and felt morality was not necessary but stood in the way of a successfully governed state. He stated that people generally tended to work for their own best interests and gave little thought to the well being of the state. Machiavelli believes that a government should be very structured, controlled, and powerful. He makes it known that the only priorities of a prince are war, the institutions, and discipline. His writings describes how it is more important for a prince to be practical than moral. This is shown where he writes, "in order to maintain the state he is often obliged to act against his promise, against charity, against humanity, and against religion" (47). In addition, Machiavelli argues that a prince may have to be cunning and deceitful in order to maintain political power. He takes the stance that it is better for the prince to be feared than loved. His view of how a government should run and his unethical conduct are both early signs of dictatorship.
When Machiavelli lost his office, he desperately wanted to return to politics. He tried to gain the favor of the Medici by writing a book of what he thought were the Medici's goals and dedicating it to them. And so The Prince was written for that purpose. Unfortunately, the Medici didn't agree with what the book said, so he was out of a job. But when the public saw the book, they were outraged. The people wondered how cruel a man could be to think evil thoughts like the ones in The Prince, and this would come back to haunt him when he was alive and dead. However, if the people wanted to know what Machiavelli really stood for, they should have read his "Discourses on Livy", which explain his full political philosophy. But not enough people had and have, and so the legacy of The Prince continues to define Machiavelli to the general public.

For all of Machiavelli’s ruthlessness and espousal of deceit, he knew the value of authenticity and relying on his administration. A true leader cannot achieve greatness alone. Machiavelli says that the prince is the state, and the state is the prince. This means that whatever vision and principles the leader holds in the highest regard, they must be known to the state so that they can be realized. He believed that no matter how a prince was elected, his success would depend largely on his ministers. Collaboration between a prince and ministers would create an atmosphere of harmony and camaraderie, highly reducing the chances of rebellion. Without the support and cooperation of the people, military action is not possible, expansion is not possible and most importantly, governance is not possible. The book is basically divided into four parts in which basic ideas of acquiring and holding new states, making alliances, avoiding rebellion, maintaining military and prince’s reputation are represented. Chapters 1 to 11 discuss the types of states, the way they are created and governed. Chapters 12 to 14 discuss the importance of a strong military and suggestions on keeping it under the prince’s command. Chapters 15 through 19 deliberate on the importance virtues. Chapters 20 to 25 focus psychological factors that impact the government. As said by Thomas Block in his book Machiavelli in America, “Machiavelli discussion was guided by the underlying view that lofty ideals translated into bad government” .
As he begins to conclude, Machiavelli states that the prince: “should think about avoiding those things which make him hated and despised.” (Mach 48) Although these lack any withstanding moral values, they are effective in the sense that they better serve their purpose. Machiavelli was seeking to display a way to hold political power by any means possible not a utopian state. This may mean malicious acts, imprisonment, and torture, or it may mean the utilization of power to achieve a common good. Machiavelli doesn’t elaborate on this. He concentrates on a realistic approach towards government, as he remains concerned with the establishment and protection of power.
Machiavelli believed that, ethics and morality were considered in other categories than those generally known. He does not deny the existence of, but did not see how they can be useful in its traditional sense as in politics and in the government of the people. That did not stop him, however, from saying that humans many show instances when they exhibit generosity and wholeheartedness. He does tell princes, however, not to count on the few occurrences that may happen, and he says, “It is necessary to be a prince to know thoroughly the nature of the people, and one of the populace to know the nature of princes”. He is saying is that it is imperative that a prince knows the natural human nature, that each and every human will become more self-interested than interested in the good of the state. If he is ignorant to that fact, his kingdom/area of rule will deteriorate simply because he believes in the citizens that occupy it. We are given descriptions of what a leader should do to effectively lead his country. A leader should be the only authority determining every aspect of the state and put in effect a policy to serve his best interests. These interests are gaining, maintaining, and expanding his political power. Machiavelli’s idea is that a ruler should use a variety of strategies (virtues) to secure his power. Machiavelli lists five virtues that a ruler should appear to have; being compassionate, trustworthy, generous, honest and religious. A ruler should possess all the qualities considered good by other people.
