Introduction Living in poverty as a lower class individual can be very stressful, anxious, and very little to no resources in order to survive for their own needs, as a person and also the needs of their family on a daily basis. Most, individuals who may live in poverty in the U.S. are single mothers who have children to raise on their own. In addition, to all single mothers, who can relate to the needs of working multiple jobs, and occasionally are going to school and getting a higher education; is not an easy job. Single mothers their first priority is to provide the needs of their living conditions and provide all of the needs of their own children. However, she decided to make a difference in her own life, and the life of her five children. She wanted her children to be proud of her as a mother, and become a role model of her own children; to let them know that if they work really hard, it is possible to have the same equal opportunity as other Americans citizens to have the American dream. According to Wilkerson (2005) she points out, that miss Whitiker’s “had to work extra hard because she felt so outranked by her classmates, and also by her own professors” (2005). Although, miss Whitiker had the same equal opportunity to get an education and become successful as a registered nurse. If she made it, and passed her state boards for nursing her life would have turned around 360 degrees and will be able to provide for her own family and would not be worry about income. Kerbo states that the Micro-process of legitimation is connected with the norms of distribution of justice. The most effect way of the process legitimation is by: “Convincing the non-elite that inequality is morally right. Those most advantaged are justified in giving orders and receiving a greater proportion of valued goods and services, or at least, creating doubts about alternatives. All, individuals strive for cognitive consistency and will develop principles of fairness, such as Distributive Justice. Lastly, there is some evidence for distribution based on need as a result of ability to understand the needs of others. This is called the process of legitimation […]” (2011:461). Therefore, Angela Whitiker’s is a great example, of individualism and equal opportunity for many Americans; who live in below poverty or who are in the working class there is a chance of having the same opportunity; work hard achieve all our goals and dreams and become successful. Eventually it will pay off to get a higher education because the rewards will be amazing towards the end of our path.
