Imagine your two favourite people in the world hanging on a cliff. If you could only save one of them, who would it be? It would be a difficult choice that no one would want to make. However, that was what Uncle Nathan had to experience in “The Skating Party” by Merna Summers. In “The Skating Party”, the protagonist, Maida was walked through the events that led up to Nathan ending up never getting married. The story possessed an engaging plot, with the intentional suppression of detail creating suspense. One of the primary recurring themes in the story was one of unpredictable emotion.
SOI-The purpose of this creative piece of writing is an entry from one of our hockey games from tournament. I have tried to use a connection to compare battle or war to hockey, to make the story become more brutal and realistic. I have written in first person to show that it is in my perspective and what I recollect from the game.
For every Olympic games, there always seems to be some type of scandal or drama. The 2002 Winter Olympic games in Salt Lake City proved itself to be full of this excitement and controversy. That year the scandal appeared in one of the most popular events, figure skating. The competition was between the Russian and Canadian figure skating pairs. The Russians showed a performance full of technical difficulty without pulling it off completely. Their performance was marred by simple mistakes. On the other hand, the Canadian pair performed a piece full of emotion, and while not as technically difficult as the Russians, more thorough and precise in their landings and jumps. After their performance the audience and the television commentators all believed they were the gold medallists. However after their score went up, they were sorely put in second place. As it turns out a French judge exchanged votes with a Russian judge so that the Russians would win the event. Since this happened, it has opened up the doors to the world of figure skating and informed the public of its corruptness. What people need to notice is that judges exchanging votes is only one part of the problem and how well a person actually performs the techniques on the ice is only one part of the judging. In an article published in Newsweek right after the scandal was exposed the author states, "For ages figure skating has attracted ridicule for letting a competitor's nationality, make-up, costume, and choice of music seem to count as much as the athleticism and grace." (Begley 40) As it stands now in 2010, it looks as though no one has learned a lesson from this event or article. Judges who make deals before competitions and get caught do not suffer any harsh consequences. They continue to practice unsportsmanlike conduct while judging. In my movie (as yet to be titled) I hope to address not only the fact that judges make deals ahead of time, but that certain skaters are discriminated by their race and sexuality as well as for arbitrary reasons.

Probably one of the most important decisions I've made in my life happened this year. The decision was me , choosing whether i wanted to do drumline or play hockey. As a freshman going into the first year of highschool, it lead me to think of plenty of things. But one important fact that stuck out was me deciding if I wanted to pursue music or sports. As a freshman , I knew that I couldn't balance sports and marching band at the same time. Rehearsal for marching band happened everyday after school until 5 pm. I knew I couldn't do homework and study for tests with only 3 hours if hockey started at 9. So, I made the decision of choosing drumline over hockey. Literary devices are important in short stories because in the story, it will help the readers understand things that may of happened, or irony with an object that is important to the character. By doing this, it helps the readers to understand the character more and their back story. If the writer didn’t show anything from the past when he was trying to add flashbacks then it will come across differently to the reader depending on the readers out take and their personal experience.
It all started when I got on the Ice. I thought It was going to be another hockey practice...but I was wrong. This practice would end with a bloody mess. Let’s just say, I'm glad that the other catch from the other team was a doctor. My friends and I were messing around in the locker room while we were getting ready for practice. I like getting ready for hockey practice it normally is fun, or I at least just try to have fun. If we do the drill wrong, we have to skate ten laps around the rank, but the bad thing is it is an olympic rank so it is bigger then are normally rank.
When most people hear the word hockey, they think about skating, ice, and a puck. What most people do not think about is running, the blistering heat, and a small orange ball, however, I do. That is because I play dek hockey, not ice, meaning that we run, and our season is never over. Playing hockey is my favorite thing to do, and I have so many fond memories. Some of those memories are, playing hockey at Bill’s Golfland, U.S.A. Ball Hockey Tryouts, and playing at Penn Hills Dek Hockey.
I have been involved in many activities throughout high school that have shaped me into the person I am today. These activities have exposed me to an immense group of different and diverse people. I’ve played hockey since age three, it is more than just a game. It is not only about playing hockey, it is about learning life skills that I will carry with me throughout the rest of my life. I have learned how to work as a team member no matter if things are going well or if they are not. You also build bonds between teammates throughout the years and make memories that will never be forgotten. At the age of 15, Amy Purdy decided that she loved to snowboard. When she started snowboarding, she learned to have confidence in herself and love all the great things about life. When Amy was 19, she was excited about her future and what was ahead, but never thought about what happened next. At the age of 19, Amy had Neisseria meningitis, which led to the failure of her kidneys and the removal of her spleen. But, it also caused the amputation of both of her legs when her body went into shock. Her body stopped the blood flow to her legs to help save her organs. But, she is very healthy to this day. Before, during, and after this tragedy popped into her life, she knew that snowboarding would always be a part of her life forever. When she was in the hospital, all she could think about is how she’s going to snowboard again and what it’s going to take to get back on a board. Before Amy lost her legs, she was a massage therapist who loved to snowboard and wanted to see the world. With her future changed, Amy was still determined to do the same things she did before, but just differently. She knew she couldn’t quit, because quitting meant giving up things that were most important in her life. While Amy was in the hospital, she claims her doctor said, whatever you believe in, think about it right now. When that happened, Amy thought in her head about love. She believed in loving life, loving each other, and loving to snowboard. Now, this is what inspires her today. Even though she loved snowboarding, she never thought about going to the Olympics until after she lost her legs. She went to the 2014 Sochi Paralympics and won a bronze medal. She also started Adaptive Action Sports to create opportunities for people with physical disabilities...
Basketball is a sport that requires hands and soccer is a sport that require legs. They similar because both require players to pass around the ball and score. And why are they different? Because you can only use your hands in a basketball game, whereas you can only use your foot and your body in a soccer match.
