In his book, 7 habits of highly effective teens , Sean Covey compares paradigms to glasses and says that if the paradigm, or perception, is incomplete it is like wearing the wrong prescription. One example Covey gave is: As a result, what you see is what you get. If you believe you’re dumb, that very belief will make you dumb. If you believe your sister is dumb, you’ll look for evidence to support your belief, find it, and she’ll remain dumb in your eyes. On the other hand, if you believe you’re smart, that belief will cast a rosy hue on everything you do. In the first few seconds of meeting someone it is our inclination to make assumptions about others. Often those assumptions are wrong but we do this as a defense mechanism. It allows us to be wary of our situation and circumstances. In the bluest eye, people around Pecola just assumed that she was ugly because of the way she handled herself. Confidence is usually shown by: walking with the shoulders back and the head held high. One example of the message that doing the opposite of this conveys is shown when Morrison says, “one day when he had been especially idle, he saw a very black girl taking a shortcut through the playground. She kept her head down as she walked. He had seen her many times before, standing alone, always alone, at recess. Nobody played with her. In the bluest eye, Toni Morrison often showed the devastating effect that low self esteem and an absence of self respect can have. Pecola Breedlove had a very har life.. she was raped by her father, ignored by her mother and viewed as ugly by everyone. If though she felt self worth and grew tired of the perceptions of others by acting I a way that showed her confidence, she could have stopped the harsh treatment she faced. Also, even when people taunted her she could have instead of looking scared be bold. Claudia, another girl around the same age as pecola, was a good example of this. Claudia didn’t allow herself to have a negative view on her appearance. Instead she didn’t let just anyone have the time of day with her. She didn’t tolerate taunts because she felt she was worth
