Romantics
Have you ever wondered how Edgar Allen Poe had an effect on us? Several poets had a great impact including Edgar Allen Poe. One in particular wrote about escapism and Imagination. Giving people the ability to escape their situation. “Romantics and transcendentalist, created a new kind of literature that emphasized imagination, feeling, individualism, and enthusiasm” (American Romanticism) The Romantics were from 1830- 1870. The characteristics in literature during the Romantics there were individualism, imagination and escapism, nature as a source of spirituality, common man as a her, and looking to the past for wisdom.
The Romantics lasted from “1830 to 1870” (The Romantic Period in American Literature and Arts). During this time the three main historical events happened which included. “Route such as the Santa Fe trail and the Oregon Trail brought a flood of settlers to the west a mass immigration that intensified with the Gold Rush of 1849”. It was mentioned by Washington Irving that “Wisdom form the past, old legends into new stories. “(The Romantic Period in American Literature and Art). In this quote it goes into a little detail explaining that the old stories that might have been used to get/ give advice on a certain situation, or how others had handled them. A popular writer during The Romantics for looking to the past for wisdom is Nathaniel Hawthorn. It as mentioned in a website that “Nathaniel Hawthorne is the strange American author who has never been out of fashion; since his death in 1864, his stories and novels have resisted the tides of taste, canon reformation, and critical vicissitude. (The Scarlet Letter and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s America). In this quote it talks about how his poems are still known, can be applied to achieve an answer. Process philosophy is the philosophy that embraces change and the developmental factors in a society. “Process philosophy was created out of the failure of Romanticism-Transcendentalism, a failure which resulted in a very profound theological shift” (Martin, 2006, pp. 145). The failure of the Romanticism-Transcendentalism period caused people to question the belief system that was present. The uncertainty and second guessing ultimately had people looking for something else to put their beliefs into. This was when a new philosophical outlook was formed, process philosophy. This new outlook was very different from the old outlook in which there were no real absolutes that exist. Since no real absolutes exist, which can also be referred to as relativism, there is no belief of the supernatural which means there is an absence of God. “The abandonment of the supernatural, then, leaves us with a process view of life and existence, including man. The 1830s was a time of serious religious conflict. Many people, especially authors, had different opinions on how to find true spirituality. In the end, authors in America created Transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is a philosophical and literary movement that searches for individual truth through spiritual reflection, complete solitude, and a deep connection with nature. Because this was established by authors, many of them wrote different pieces reflecting and using the beliefs of Transcendentalism. Ralph Waldo Emerson was considered to be the father of Transcendentalism. He wrote many influential pieces that follow and emphasize major Transcendental beliefs. The major beliefs include the over-soul, nature, and senses. In addition to those, there are minor beliefs and overall ways of living. These beliefs were included in Transcendental pieces as a general way to share the belief and to create a movement. Due to the use of nature, senses, and the over-soul as its three core Transcendental beliefs, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Nature” successfully explain the fundamentals of Transcendentalism.
The Romantic era writers, Washington Irving and Edgar Allan Poe, had many similarities but even more differences, in both writing theme and style. This is very evident in their works, “Rip Van Winkle”, by Irving, and “The Fall of the House of Usher”, by Poe.
Just as the European romantics cared about emotions, nature, imagination, meditation, humanity and freedom, the American first "group of great imaginative writers -Irving, Bryant and Poe" (readers Note p 57) -cared about the them too . In their writings, these writers were taken by the romantic ideals empathizing on nature, creating their own world, borrowing sets from the past or from legends, meditating their life, and finding their own explanations to its processes . With such attitudes, these writers made their way into literature as romantics . " The Devil And Tom Walker","Hop Frog", " To a Waterfowl" and "Thanatopsis" serve as good examples for American Romanticism .
Josh Jovevski, Tyler Sidwell Mrs. Kelly English 11 Honors 8 May 2014 American Renaissance Transcendentalist poet Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” After the American Romantic Era, there was a common drive amongst the population to improve themselves as individuals. This movement towards self-improvement signaled the beginning of a new literary era in the United States: The American Renaissance. As a substitute to the traditional intellect, people in this time period chose to fall back on a religious view of the world, Transcendentalism.
During the American Renaissance, writers were put into one of two categories. The categories were the Dark Romantics and the Transcendentalists. Some Dark Romantics include Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Washington Irving. The Dark Romantics stories included creepy symbols, horrific themes, and psychological effects of guilt and sin. The Devil and Tom Walker by Washington Irving gives a few examples as to why life is meaningless to some people.Humans are not all good, there are some cruel people in this world. Romanticism is the style of writing that the author uses to express each poem and the elements that are involved within such as nature, emotion, individualism, nationalism, idealism, and imagination. What makes a poem romantic is “The ideas around art as inspiration, the spiritual and aesthetic dimension of nature, and metaphors or organics” (Spanckeren 2). Poets that are associated with romanticism are Walt Whitman, Edgar Allen Poe, and Emily Dickinson. Whitman’s poem is “When I heard the learn’d astronomer”. Poe’s poem is “Annabel Lee”. Dickinson poem is “The Soul Selects Her Own Society”. The American Romantic Movement is fully represented by Dickinson, Poe, and Whitman.
Romanticism was an artistic and philosophical time period that occurred in Europe during the late 18th century. Many forms of art were introduced at this time, as were forms of poetry and unorthodox ideals coming from the creators of these pieces. The poetry of Blake, Wordsworth, and Keats all shared aspects of nature and their personal emotions displayed through literary allusions. They break away from social norms, and even artistic norms, which was the aim of the artists during this part of literary history.
When many hear “Romanticism” they think of love, but Romanticism isn’t mainly about love. Yes, it may have some love, but it’s also about reasoning, nature, imaginations, and individualism. Like American Romanticism, that occurred from 1830 – 1865. It was actually caused by Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper. For Americans, “it was a time of excitement over human possibilities, and of individual ego. American writers didn’t know what “America” could possibly mean in terms of literature, which was American and not British. It questioned their identity and place in society, creatively” (Woodlief). It was characterized by an interest in nature, and the significance of the individual’s expression on emotion and imagination; good literature should have heart, not rules. Some of the most famous authors who wrote during American Romanticism were Nathaniel Hawthorne, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Henry David Thoreau, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. American Romanticism is important because it was the “historical period of literature in which modern readers most began to see their selves and their own conflicts and desires”. Romanticism was a literary revolution.
The Romantic period was an expressive and intellectual movement that originated in Europe towards the end of the 18th century and peaked in the 1800s-1850s. This movement was defined and given depth by an expulsion of all ideals set by the society of the particular time, in the sense that the Romantics sought something deeper, something greater than the simplistic and structured world that they lived in. They drew their inspiration from that around them. Their surroundings, especially nature and the very fabric of their minds, their imagination. The Romantic period is chronologically defined by the 19th century. It was an era of great turmoil. With the French Revolution, the American Civil War, the Franco-Prussian War, the Crimean War, the Spanish-American War and various revolutions across Europe, a great sense of upheaval was felt by the bourgeoisie and upper class struggling to maintain their affluent lifestyle during this time period. The Dream of American Romanticism The Romantic Movement seized America from 1800 to 1860. A romantic is the name given to those who value feeling and intuition over reason (Arpin 162). During this time period, Americans were migrating westward to explore the land of America. Moving towards the countryside, they pursued beauty and tried evading their daily troubles. Romantics argued that art rather than science could best express universal truth (The Romantic Period, 1820-1860: Essayists and Poets). The romantics took a less rational approach with their beliefs. Rationalists and romantics had a very different look on cities. Rationalists looked at them as a place for success. Romantics ran from these cities viewing them as a place of poverty and death. During this time Americans felt a sense of freedom from English rule. Frontier promised opportunity for expansion, growth, freedom; Europe lacked this element (American Romanticism Overview). Americans felt the need to explore science and the land of North America. This movement brought literature of fireside poetry to the American Hero. Over the course of the American Romantic Period, focusing on emotions, changed the way Americans comprehended upward mobility in the American dream, which in turn changed the way authors wrote and lived their lives. The numerous characteristics of the romantic period helped shape the era. Romantics obsessed over the idea of individuality. They felt the need to have self-expression. The Romantic Period was a time when authors and poets such as Longfellow, Bryant, Irving, and Wadsworth wrote stories and poems to illustrate the American Dream in a new light of love, freedom, and adventure. The will to succeed through feelings rather than intuition was evident throughout the Romanticism period, shown by authors through such characters as the Romantic Hero; tones of achieving reflected the American Dream shared among the people through stories and experiences.
