Have you ever wondered how Edgar Allen Poe had an effect on us? Several poets had a great impact including Edgar Allen Poe. One in particular wrote about escapism and Imagination. Giving people the ability to escape their situation. “Romantics and transcendentalist, created a new kind of literature that emphasized imagination, feeling, individualism, and enthusiasm” (American Romanticism) The Romantics were from 1830- 1870. The characteristics in literature during the Romantics there were individualism, imagination and escapism, nature as a source of spirituality, common man as a her, and looking to the past for wisdom.
The Romantics lasted from “1830 to 1870” (The Romantic Period in American Literature and Arts). During this time the three main historical events happened which included. “Route such as the Santa Fe trail and the Oregon Trail brought a flood of settlers to the west a mass immigration that intensified with the Gold Rush of 1849”. It was mentioned by Washington Irving that “Wisdom form the past, old legends into new stories. “(The Romantic Period in American Literature and Art). In this quote it goes into a little detail explaining that the old stories that might have been used to get/ give advice on a certain situation, or how others had handled them. A popular writer during The Romantics for looking to the past for wisdom is Nathaniel Hawthorn. It as mentioned in a website that “Nathaniel Hawthorne is the strange American author who has never been out of fashion; since his death in 1864, his stories and novels have resisted the tides of taste, canon reformation, and critical vicissitude.
