American Pie is a song that is a very slow and deliberate song with a lot of thought put into it. This is a song that has over 850 lyrics that play for 8:30, the longest song ever to be listed as the Number one song on top hits charts. All these lyrics don’t just have the meaning of the individual words themselves, they paint a picture for the audience listening about what life was like and the events that transpired in the 1950-70’s, along with how Don McLean interpreted them. The lyrics of this song appeal to the youth of that timeframe in rhetorical ways of Pathos, Ethos, Doxa. Pathos is shown to try and emotionally connect with the audience; Ethos is used to show he knows what he is talking about by relating his real life stories and knowledge back into the essay, and lastly, Doxa is used very often in this in the aspect that Don was a huge Buddy Holly fan and he felt a deep connection to him. I see the form of Pathos in the album cover because at this time there was the Cold War going on, and we had just gotten out of southeast asia, so there was lots of patriotism that was being portrayed here. The way the thumb is pointed up seems that America is on the climb, and that everyone in America should feel that sense of, “America is a great country, and I am proud to live here.” Also, in the music video for this song, the “American Dream” seems to be portrayed very well because it shows, I can get a great new car and I can get a pretty girl to love me. The Breaking Bad television series has been memorable to viewers due to its diverse plot and stirring scenes. Vince Gillian incorporated Scholes matrices of power into his piece. Rhetoric has played an important roll in Breaking Bad, pathos, ethos, and logos have brought this film to another level. Allowing a sense of emotion, logic and credibility, within each episode. The series has been culturally relatable to viewers and the visually fascinating. Through narrativity the series has offered us intense plot lines and climaxes that are hard for viewers to resist and keep people watching. How does being sentenced to prison affect someone later in his or her life? Many people pose the question, but they have yet to form an immutable response. Oscar Wilde once said, “one of the many lessons that one learns in prison is, that things are what they are and will be what they will be”, this quotation engenders the philosophy of prison, which consists of one being held responsible for his or her wrongdoings. The book Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman explores how a once drug money launderer goes to jail for a crime which she committed almost a decade earlier. At the time she committed the crime, she considered herself lost and naive in regards to her life. Throughout the book, the audience witnesses Kerman’s struggles and how she ultimately overcomes them in order to better herself for the future. After examining the book, one can see that Kerman uses many rhetorical elements in her writing such as ethos, the rhetorical triangle, narration, and myriad others to make her memoir a timeless piece of non-fiction.
The article “The Coddling Of The American Mind”, written by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, was written about how teachers are afraid of what they are allowed to say during in class because of the emotional effect on the students. While writing the article the authors have many examples of logos, ethos, and pathos. The logos of the article appeals to logic by presenting facts and statistics. The writers provide definitions of words such as microaggression and trigger warning. While explaining the definitions they go on to give real world examples to further the understanding of the words. A town, a team, a dream. Friday Night lights document the 1988 football season of Permian High School in Odessa, Texas. Bissinger explores the various themes of the novel and uses conceit to colorfully describe the contrasting attitudes towards sports and academics. In the small town of Odessa bases Fridays nights in the fall are dedicated to Permian football. As a result of the obsessive attitude towards football a ridiculous amount of pressure is thrusted upon the coaches and players. Bissinger tackled the many problems in the town such as extreme pressure to perform, racism, and the relationship between parent and child. While Bissinger had several preconceived notions, he was ultimately proven wrong and through analysis of themes and incorporation of comparisons in the form of conceits he was able to develop his understanding of the town and accurately depict the events that transpired.
Using pathos, he expresses his feelings and shows sympathy towards his mother for all hard times that she had trying to raise him as a single mother on welfare. “I shed tears with my baby sister over the years we was poorer than the other little kids”, gives the audience reason to believe that he was ashamed of not having as much as the other little kids in his community. The chorus of the song is another example of pathos. It shows the never-ending love and appreciation that he has for his mother. No matter how much they fight or how hard life was for them she’s always there to pick him up when he’s down. “I reminisce on the stress I caused it was hell hugging on my mama from a jail cell”. This shows the people who are listening that he regrets putting his mother through all the hell that he did by being a rebellious teenager and not appreciating the little things she did for him. In the beginning of the song Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur explains how she was pregnant with Tupac while she was in jail thinking that she would have him and never be able to see him. She was lucky enough to be released a month before she had him, from then on she had big hopes and goals for him. Later on when Tupac found himself in a jail cell at a young age he says it was hell that he never thought would happen. The last example of pathos is this verse “I wish I can take the pain away if you can make it through the night there’s a brighter day”. This verse is powerful only because so many people can relate to feeling like nothing in their life would ever change. It gives hope to people who are going through similar struggles and have no one to encourage them to keep pushing forward it will eventually get easier. This song lacks logos but considering the context of the song, it would be unnecessary and inappropriate to add in any facts or resources. For the pathos aspect of the song, the artist uses the talk of drugs and the comparison to Peter Pan to affect the emotions of the audience. Both of these allow the audience to make possible connections as well as help them understand the emotions behind the story deeper. Along with these uses of rhetorical appeals, the acoustic sound of the song adds to the emotion of the song because it allows the listener to focus on the words and story with a slow tempo. Pathos: The emotions that are really being played on the most are anger. People have so much anger when they can not understand the world or what is going on in it. The audience becomes furious to all the killing and death in the world and they need someone there to sympathize with them. Anti-Flag gets the listener angry by exposing the faults of the world. The listener appreciates this because Anti-Flag will not sell into the wrongs of the world. It uses the emotion of finding comfort in that there is someone else out there that has the same views as the listener does. The band uses punk rock music as a common ground with the listeners and expresses their views through their songs. This relates back to the author because this is a great way to protest through music.

Jane the virgin is a show about a woman who had her life planned out the way she wanted until it made a spiraling turn due to unfortunate events. When Jane was a young girl, she had made a promise to her grandma that she would save her virginity until marriage. Unfortunately, during a doctor's check up she was artificially inseminated. After she agreed to keep the baby her relationship with her finance when down the hill. Keeping the baby also caused her school work to be a little harder for her. An examination of Jane the virgin will demonstrate the concepts of process of listening, the benefits of power and being in denial.
The Song “American Idiot” by Green Day uses techniques to engage the audience to interoperate the issues. Green day through their style of music convey issues such as the medias over powering effect on society, greed and the division of the United States of American over political issues. Green Day’s negative stance on the issues through these techniques conveys the audience to agree with the main issues being focused.
After reviewing this week’s episodes of serial, and given our topic, I found that the Rhetorical Appeals are directly linked to the court cases. These Rhetorical Appeals (Ethos, Pathos, and Logos), are used throughout both cases. From Jay’s case, it’s clear that Pathos and Ethos are two main elements supporting his defense. However in Adnan’s case, Logos was the prevalent appeal when defending his innocence.

In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain uses diction to make the book accurate and interesting. The use of appropriate speech and phrases of the time period, makes the novel real, genuine, and gives the reader the feeling that they are being thrown into this world where everything is bizarre and disparate from modern culture. The perfect example of this is Aunt Polly’s monologue in the beginning of the book. We get an insight into her mind as she talks to herself about how to punish Tom and gives us a background on why she is taking care of him. One crucial thing that this passage shows us, is shortened words; like ’pears instead of appears. This way of talking gives us an insight into how the character sounds, what her accent may be like,

The band takes into consideration various factors of why it is happening including the media and religion.
